Wait for M2 or?

No one knows for sure but I do imagine the M2 will have better cores (and potentially a couple more graphics cores) while the M1 Pro and Max will have more cores of the M1 variety. I wouldn’t expect those to get updated until next year, though you never know.
I’d say if you can wait then do so because I’ve heard conflicting rumours as to whether the M2 MacBook Air or 13” Pro will get the fancier display.

M2 will be better on gpu core/cores for sure than M1 but still behind M1 pro even the binned option with 14gpu
M2 will be around 5-10% improved cpu performance and 40-50% on gpu vs the M1
M2 10 gpu cores will be the closest with the 14 gpu M1 pro on the gpu but still different band-with

Yes. M1 Pro/Max will still be faster in multi-core (more performance cores) and GPU. Plus they have the hardware encoder, which is absent in the M1.
The M2, just like the M1, will still be focused on efficiency as it will need to go into the iPad. It will have new cores though, so single core performance might be faster than M1/Pro/Max.
I think if you really want the display of the new Macbook Pros, I would upgrade now/soon.
I don't think the Air will get any fancy display. The current retina display is already "fancy" for the price point. I bet Apple will keep pro-motion on the 14/16" Pros. It's all about upselling.
Will the M2 support two 6K monitors like the M1 Pro? I currently have an LG 34 inch 5K2K and would like to buy a Studio Display or just replace the LG for a dual Studio Display setup.
