My MacBook Pro 2014 is getting old but still functional and not powerful. I honestly did not expect M1 chip to be powerful cpu that can handle all task. My plan was buying intel MacBook Pro but change my mind and went for M1 chip. I don't intent using for gaming 😄 but for work or research related. It's very difficult pulling the trigger because I keep hearing rumors M2 chip MacBook Pro will be release summer or fall. The M2 is more powerful than previous. Are those rumors confirm? I am confused at this point.

Thank You!

If you can wait, I would wait to see the new productline, and then pick one up upon release or get a discount on the older models. The new M2-lines sounds so exiting that I personally would not dare to buy an M1 MBP right now.

If your current Macbook is able to handle your requirements, then you can wait and see what upgrades the next Macbook Pro will have.

I would wait regardless we are only 2 weeks from WWDC but be prepared to spend more, I expect the current 13” to get replaced by the 14” this summer with a price bump of $2-$300, so the entry level pro will start at around $1499/$1599.

I would wait for WWDC, but buy if nothing is announced there. We don't know when the next gen M chips will arrive. They might still be a year away.

They could, but probably they will be released this year. The new iPhone will likely get an A15 chip and the M-series counterpart (M2?) will probably be released alongside it. Plus, Intel is releasing its 12th gen processors before the end of the year (Q4 2021) and it is expected to bring several improvements over the 11th gen. Apple will want to keep ahead.

The MacBook Pro will get the M1X the M2 will land in the new Air later this year or early next year, with the M2X coming late next year most likely.

Well, I am not sure about this and I would not go so far as to make such assumptions. I do not know how Apple will market its processors. It may well skip the M1X and launch M2 and M2X (or M2Z) alongside a new line of MacBooks and larger iMacs. For now, I would just assume that a new beefier M-series chip will be released this year.

If you’re waiting on next chip for an entry level Mbp then may as well buy one now. If you want mini led then definitely wait.

Yeah we certainly can’t assume anything but if the chip going into the Pro’s is in fact an M2, I highly doubt the chip going into the refreshed air late this year/early next year will be called M1X based off the assumption the M series chips will have a naming scheme similar to the A series chips.

The M2 is likely going to be an A15X, just renamed, just like the M1 was basically an A14X with a new naming scheme and as we all know the A15 will first launch on the iPhone in September, which makes perfect sense for the A15X or M2 to launch after that which is perfect timing for the redesigned air in late 2021 or early 2022.

On top of this all of the rumours leading up to the new iPad Pro suggested the chip in production would be called the A14X but they were wrong on that front, now the rumours are suggesting the chip now in production is the M2 so from previous history we can’t assume that is in fact what it’s going to be called.

Like a moving train, the next generation is always an improvement. It's really a question of when to jump on the train. It's kinda like buying a new car. It drops in value when you drive it off the lot. So wait till after WWDC on June 7, then if there's no more information on when M2 is available, You're going to have to choose to jump on the train now or decide to wait.
Apple products are considered vintage when Apple stoped distributing them for sale more than 5 and less than 7 years ago. They're considered obsolete when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago. So it may not be long till your machine is no longer capable of running new software releases. See here.

I personally refuse to buy an M1 anything right now because it breaks a 20 year rule of never buy Gen 1 Apple tech on anything.

Well, there are some possibilities.

Apple may release new computers with an M1X now. Or it may wait until later in the year and release M2X alongside M2.

Personally I have a growing gut feeling we might just see an M1X thrown into the current design, with a design refresh next year with the M2X and miniLED, I know there are some rumours it’s getting a ‘minor’ design change, where other rumours are pointing to a ‘major’ design change… it’s just very hard to predict at this point.

To resume...wait until 7th of June
There will be no M2 macbook pros at this WWDC/summer...there will be the M1X (the M2 will be kept for the next MBA
You should wait for it
M1x will have
- up to 64gb Ram
- up to 4 or 8 tb SSD
- 4TB/usb4 ports
- Hdmi 2.1
- support for multiple displays
- 14" and 16" displays with probably mini-led tech

So at this point if you are not limited by price and time...you should definitely wait 2 more weeks

OP:

Don't buy anything until WWDC in a few more weeks.
See what announcements are made.
They -might- make an announcement regarding the upcoming 14" and 16" MacBook Pros (with a shipping date to come a little later, perhaps Aug/Sep).

IF you can continue to "hold out" a while longer, I believe you could end up a more satisfied customer...

Same than you, i'm waiting for the WWDC anouncement, because all i have on my current MBP 2014 might be back on this new MBP 2021 14' or 16' :): magsafe, sd card reader, hdmi port , physical fonction buttons :) and a huge autonomy i guess.

I am not dure how much improvement can be made over the current MacBook design, but I suppose there will be some "major" redesign sometime until next year.

Perhaps miniLED, larger screens, a somewhat thinner body and smaller bezels, and a different keyboard with no TouchBar.

Yeah for me, I am between the current M1 Air and Pro, I would prefer the pro for the brighter screen, better mic’s and the fan, but I am just not keen on the Touch Bar as most users seem to hate it and with rumours of it being scrapped I don’t really want to buy into something which will probably loose support in a year or so.

So my thinking is wait for WWDC, see what the Pro’s bring, if they have a redesign see what sort of prices they come in at and potentially get one, if they don’t have a redesign and still have Touch Bar get the Pro entry level, if nothing comes I might just take the plunge and get the Air.

I have a MacBook Pro with TouchBar. It looks good but is not really useful. Having to look at both the screen and the TB is just bad design and bad ergonomics.

But it does not hurt either. Just consumes more battery life. Which the M1 MacBook Pro has to spare.

I would wait for a redesign but, as much as I think the M1 is impressive, I am very much leaning towards leaving the Mac platform for good.
