I have Samsung TV model S95B and it’s a great tv except it lacks Dolby Vision. Ok so we know a few things:
- Samsung owners can only get this similar experience with HDR10+
- Very few contents is available in HDR10+ but it seems to be changing with streaming industry with ATV+ app increasing support for HDR10+ and Prime Video backing it up in parallel with DV
- still DV has huge upper hand in streaming and 4K Blue ray
- some DV content on ATV+ gets converted to HDR10+ when playing (like Mythic Quest series) and some to regular HDR10 (Alita).

I have ATV4K 2gen (2021) I purchased after it came out.

Then rumors came Apple was going to roll out support for HDR10+ with TV OS 16 but as of now it’s available only in the 3rd gen 2022. I really like my older base ATV with built-in thread and Ethernet port. I don’t have need for a bigger storage.

However Apple dropped on us surprise when it released this feature only for its freshly released ATV this year.

I am on a fence between upgrading or keep my older ATV with a hope Apple will add this support in later TvOS releases.

Can you tell the difference between HDR10+ and Dolby Vision?

Therefore there's no real difference between the dynamic formats as they both top out at 4,000 cd/m². Winner: Tie between HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are currently mastered between 1,000 to 4,000 cd/m², so there's no difference there.Mar 31, 2022

HDR10 vs HDR10+ vs Dolby Vision: Which is better?

AND

Is HDR10+ better than HDR10?

Secondly, HDR10+ has a higher brightness standard. While HDR10 aims for 1,000 nits, HDR10+ aims for 4,000 nits. Lastly, HDR10+ comes from film and production studios, whereas HDR10 comes from technology manufacturers. So, this means HDR10+ has drastically more creatives in its corner.Oct 18, 2022

HDR10 vs HDR10+: How Do They Compare?

Samsung TV don't support Dolby Vision and did not mean to ask for difference between HDR10+ and Dolby Vision in my thread. What I am asking if there is chance Apple will update older ATV4Ks released last year and maybe earlier so I don't have to get rid of 1 year old ATV to buy newest that supports HDR10+ that unlike DB is the only format that only format that works in my TV. Also it's still unclear how much content in ATV+ app support both DV and HDR10+. Some content marked as DV only, falls back to HDR10+ and some just regular HDR10.

My point is that you may not see any difference on your current setup with the 2022 ATV and your current TV. You would need to upgrade bough, Buying a 2022 ATV now would only spread out your cost. Wouldn’t even try guessing what Apple will do with everything going on with supply chain and Governments. I just updated my gen 1 ATV (4K) and with my eyes 😵‍💫 the new one doesn’t look any better with HD10+ and or Dolby. Should have saved my $.

I upgraded to the 2022 from the 2021. I have gone back to the 2021 as the 2022 has all kinds of issues, The remote disconnects every few days, the wired ethernet port misbehaves capping at lower speeds than supplied, some apps such as Amazon Prime and YouTube TV blackout randomly. Don't do it.
