I got my first iphone today, the 3GS. When I was coming home, I decided to look at the maps feature. To my surprise, the blue dot on the screen was moving as my car was! Is this charged as part of the data plan?

BTW, I love this phone. It's the best phone i've ever had. I love it!

And here's a news flash, GPS don't require a monthly subscription! (though Verizon and Sprint will have you believing otherwise). Don't believe me? Go out and buy a Garmin. Surprisingly enough you only pay upfront - no future payments required!!! Shocking!

Well, aside from the taxes you pay to maintain the system...

But, maybe in the future there will be an additional tax on every device as well :(

That's the government tracking you. Beware....

Yeah, and the iPhone 3G actually lost GPS ability since 3.0. Cool eh?

Spaz, my GPS works fine on my 3G on 3.0. I used it the other day. Worked perfectly.
Don't try to pass off you problem as universal. Why don't you start a thread about it?

:O Shocking-er!!! AT&T pulls the same crap on most non iPhones. Even on the iPhone if you get the AT&T Navigator app they charge you $10 a month. My friend has the Impression & she gets charged for maps usage, so does my other friend on his Sony somethin-or-other.

Basically, AT&T is just as crappy as Sprint & VZW (coming from someone who uses a Sprint aircard daily & has used VZW on friends' phones)

I'm sorry. I just noticed that I could never get an accurate lock on my 3G, but my 3GS worked perfectly. However, on my 3G 2.2.1, GPS worked decently.
