My understanding has always been that the OS on an MBP can’t be downgraded below whatever specific OS shipped on the machine.
I’ve read that once or twice before as well but then there’s come someone in and said it’s about if Apple ever sold that machine with the previous OS. This is however of course something the user has to do a clean reinstall of the OS but maybe that’s what you’re talking about as well?
Anyway I really hope we’ll be able to run Big Sur on our machines and I’m afraid you might be right regarding if the machine you bought had it installed when you bought it you can run it but not else but I’m not sure about it. Let’s hope Apple cares about more than adaption marketing numbers! I mean.. Since they haven’t been that great regarding releasing new trouble free OS versions the last couple of years. Hehe.
Chances are the new Macs will ship with Monterey pre-installed just like last years M1 Macs shipped with Big Sur (and just like the new iPhones will most likely ship with iOS 15). Obviously none of us here knows anything for sure, this is all just speculation but judging by leaks and rumors it would seem that Apple plans to hold the Mac event in late October. Since this event will be Mac focussed, it would make sense for Apple to follow the same trend as last year and have the initial release of Monterey come the Thursday after the event then have the new Macs ship with it pre-installed the following week. Mac OS Monterey is a much smaller update than Big Sur was so I'm sure the initial release will be much smoother.
My prediction is we will know more next month. As the new beta versions keep coming, we can see if the polish is getting closer to release quality and we should also start seeing glyphs and references to the 14", 16", Mac mini and the M1X chip.

That article is poorly written. Gurman didn’t say November for MBPs.

That's because I never said Apple was forcing anybody to do anything. I also never said it was standard practice for Apple. I said my argument sounds normal to me (and it has happened). As opposed to your argument of expecting Apple to release a new computer with an old OS for the mission critical reasons you argue. It's just not going to happen not matter how much you wish it would for your reasons. Oh, there's a chance it could happen due to logistics, but not for the reason you hope.
So in this fantasy, the arbitrary line is the 1st or 2nd update? Which one? Why not the 3rd or 4th? A few times OS updates have screwed things up well into the new year. Also, is that a point update or an integer update? Please don't answer.
Anyway, hope it all works out for you and they release the computers in September and Monterey at a later date. We'll all be very happy if your drum is on beat.
FYI: My 2013 MBP was released the same day as OS Mavericks and came installed with it.

For me, I’m going 32gb RAM, 32 core GPU (hopefully its standard on the 16”) but I’ll keep the base 512gb SSD sense I can just use the SD card slot to save space on the internal drive.

What price are you guessing you're gonna have to pay for that beast?
I guess the baseline is 2500 $ for 512HD, most CPU cores, GPU 32, 16Gram
If you choose 8TB HD for MacPro now it's about 2500 dollars. 32Gram is about 500 dollars for intel iMac. So you reckon 5.5k?
I'm looking at 32Gram, 2TB HD and thinking 3,500 dollars.
As for the SD card. I'm interested in that, but will the card be flush with the side? I'm guessing not. If so, it's not overly portable. Fine if you only use at home, but not so good for those on the move. I also read that keeping the card in all the time and having constant access to it may not be a good thing??? I actually have no idea.
It's fine to have an SD card all the time in the slot for long periods as many android phones, the Nintendo Switch have microSD cards.
The 2015 MBP and before had SD Cards and I had to say it would be like it was on those pre-2015 MBPs.
I much prefer to have SD card built in the MBP as that would mean no nasty SD card to USB-C dongle sticking out
which is unsightly.
I just want wireless mice manufacturers to make a USB-C wireless dongle again! Bluetooth mice suck, and USB-A wireless receivers would need adapters now.
I don't really get why they don't exist. (Ideally these would all work better internally - does BT 5.2 do a better job with mice?). I just generally despise BT all around.
I went back to a wired mouse two weeks ago. I am sure it’s cause I have a 2027 iMac but the stuttering and loss of contact was driving me nuts

they have existed for Macs previously. I used to have a flush 256GB SD to go with my 512GB SSD about 5 years ago.
I'd love to have a USB A port as well, but it's not going to happen it seems.
