Waiting for 2021 MBP

I'm holding out on a 15" 2012 model. No way I'm moving pre-ARM, pre-5nm, pre DDR5.

Two-year transition period confirmed. And I don't doubt the MBP 16 is somewhere in the latter half of that transition because it will need an absolute redesign.
The biggest reveal today was that iOS apps run natively. Which means a touchscreen Mac suddenly feels very likely.

MBP 16 will be definitely my next mbp.
There is no point of getting an intel mbp,
because I keep my mbp's for six years at least!
So, though I am not in a big hurry,
I guess there is some kind of waiting for a new MBP 16 with newly announced 'apple silicon' cpu.
Lets keep this thread well informed, about the evolution and advancements on this particular topic.

I'd be wary of buying one of the first ARM machines. Lets not forget the first Intel Macs were only supported from 10.4-10.6. Back then of course the releases stuck around longer (10.6 wasn't replaced until 2011), but I'd still prefer they work out the bugs first. Since my primary workflow is through Final Cut and Pixelmator I'm curious to see just how powerful these new machines are.

Are you saying right now is a good time to buy the 16"? Because it's going to take another 2 years to see a redesign?

They said it would take 2 years to transition the whole lineup to ARM, but I would guess an ARM MBP will be ready in 2021 if not earlier. It is likely the Mac Pro might be the last to transition.

Ah interesting. I haven't watched WWDC yet, but 2021 seems oddly early for the 16". Are you suggesting late 2021 earliest?
They said in the presentation they have a "family" of Apple SoCs. I don't think it'll be that long of a wait for an ARM 16". They've been working on all this for years already. If anything, the wait will just be due to the usual release schedule Apple tends to do, and not because the higher powered chips aren't ready. I don't know for sure obviously, but that's the vibe i got from the whole presentation. It came off like everything's more or less ready to go already, they're just spacing out the releases. I guess it depends on if we get another Intel 16" at the end of this year. In that case i would then assume yeah we won't get an ARM 16" till end of 2021 so there's a nice solid year between them. But if Apple skips a Intel 16" release then i think it's possible that a 16" ARM could drop anytime in 2021 to reset the yearly release schedule to be when they want it to be.
In terms of the usual first gen products being buggy thing, i think it may be not as much the case with this particular scenario. Just because Apple's silicone isn't actually new, they've been working with it for years and years already. It's not actually first gen, it's taking something they've already had and just expanding on it. Not to say it'll be perfect, but i think it will be less buggy than people assume it will be. Devs get their kits this/next week though, so i'm curious to see what they say over the coming months.

Cook explicitly said they had more Intel Macs to come though; where I do agree is don't expect to see any new designs with Intel chips. So no 'iPad Pro' iMac with Intel, probably no mini LED MacBook Pros, all the new goodies will be for the Arm macs. I guess they will update to Tiger Lake (the most significant Intel release in a long time) then leave those machines on sale for a couple of years alongside the new Arm Macs so they can go out on something of a high.

Hard to say - it’s anyone’s guess how much they have progressed with the chips. It could be at a very advanced stage so even early 2021 could be possible.

So what happens to Windows support? Windows 10 can run on ARM chips (there are few out there) so I assume it's possible to continue supporting Bootcamp?
The Mac really got popular around the time when Vista nearly killed off Microsoft but even then big part of many people's transition from PC to Mac was the option to boot to Windows via Bootcamp. Please don't take it away....

There is no indication so far that Apple will support Bootcamp. Given that about 2% of the users use Bootcamp, it may not be worth the effort for Apple.
I think this largely depends on Microsoft and if they want to push their ARM version.

Before the keynote, I was hoping to get a 16' Late 2019 MBP- but now with the transition away from Intel, I'd rather wait.
Keeping my reliable Late 2013 MBP on Mojave until I can get my hands on a 2021 MBP. It's still running really well after 7 years. I'm pretty attached to it and don't really want to retire it ASAP.

My late 2013 MBP ran quite well on Catalina, but I didn't do anything fancy with it. Just upgraded to a 2020 13" MBP (before announcement), going to hold onto it until Apple announced their first ARM-only MacOS. I was hoping that my recent purchase will last me 7+ years (my 2013 was still running strong when I gave it away), but I've come to accept the fact that I'll probably have to upgrade in 3-4 years now when I expect the first ARM-only MacOS to be released.
All that being said, rumors of a Q4 ARM 13" MBP will sting a little bit if true... didn't think I would miss the boat by only a few months!
