imo it would surprise me, if "big" desktop (pro) machines would run the same chip as the notebooks, given they are thermally not as limited as their mobile computers and don't have to care about battery run time.

At this point we don’t really know… However, even if the M1X was supposed to come at WWDC, that would still be a 7 month gap between the M1 and M1X. If we apply that same gap to the M2 which is rumored to come in April, then we won’t see an M2X until November. Rumors say the new iMac will be introduced along side the new MacBook Air so…
If we believe the rumors, the iMac Pro (if that’s what it’s called) was supposed to come along side the new MacBook Pros… with an M1X inside. Apple delayed development on it to focus on the smaller iMac. Also even the M1 far surpasses the CPU performance of most desktops. All the M1 is missing is better GPU performance which the M1X will have. So the M1X is certainly powerful enough to go into a desktop.
Also if you look at how Apple is integrated the M1 into their lineup, it would certainly make sense for the M1X to be in the MacBook Pros, higher Mac Mini and larger iMac… which is exactly what the rumors were saying back in the summer.
Again we just don’t know enough but my original point was that there isn’t much sense talking about an M2X yet sense we have no idea what Apples update cycle will be, especially as we are still going through the silicon transition. It’s entirely possible that we do see the M1X put into as many devices as possible over the next year and then the Pro version of the M2 is exclusive to the new Mac Pro to finish the transition.

I do agree that whatever AS will be released next will be pretty powerful - both on gpu and cpu-side. All I'm saying is: even a M1X could do more in a desktop-environment, if the engineers let it off its leash. If the M1X can reach a number "X", "Y", and "Z" in synthentic benchmarks for cpu- single-& multicore and gpu in a mobile setup, than sure enough a desktop-machine should be able to add another 10-20% on each of these results.

I fully agree and I wonder if we will start seeing some differences when Apple uses the same chip in different machines. So far the M1 runs the same speed whether your using a MacBook Air or a 24” iMac but with the A15 we are seeing some differences with the iPad mini clocked lower than the iPhone 13s.
The 32 core (Jade-C Die) version of the M1X will definitely be a powerhouse and it could be possible that Apple let’s it run a little faster on the desktop version.
This transition sure is confusing and the chip shortage situation is probably making things even more complex. Hopefully things will start to become more clear after the M1X is introduced.

Technically, I jumped on the last cycle of what would be called the 2016 generation. Even though its all new M1 SoC, which is risky, I felt like and consider it a conclusion that the M1 was really targeting this design all along. But Apple just wasn't ready yet, but when you look back in hindsight, the butterfly keyboard issues due to the thin design; the package of the M1 logic board and how little space it uses; Apple has been working on this for a while. It was parallel to how they had OS X running on Intel in secret.
Some of the oh yeah moments: T2 chip and Bridge OS 2.0, No fan design of the 12 inch MacBook Pro, dropping 32 bit app support, bringing specific iPad OS apps to macOS starting with Mojave. All of this kinda proves 2016 to 2019 was a public beta test period for the M1 Macs we have so far.
With the next generation coming with a redesign, as much as I would have loved to get a 15 inch instead, I will wait until the tail end. I didn't buy the retina MacBook Pro until the tail end which was the early 2015 13 inch MBP. It has been a solid machine since, getting little use these days though. But, I will follow the same formula and jump in again around 2025.

I don't think Apple is gonna go with any emphasis for the branding of what ever M series SoC that goes into any future Mac going forward. The new MacBook Pros expected in October or November will have either a variant of M1 with more Cores and GPU power; or an even more powerful second generation called M2. The fact that they chose to use M1 in an iPad Pro without defining it differently, shows those days of the A 12z or x or iPhone S model branding are likely over. I think it was just a Phil Schiller thing to do that because of his love of cars. Since he's no longer running marketing, they likely decided to sunset that practice.
Yet we do know the a15 in the new iPad mini is going to be downclocked compared to the iPhone; so the name of an soc doesn’t say anything about the final specs of a product.

Having used an iPad Pro for the last while with cellular, I'd really like to see them add this option to the MBP but I think some people have been saying similar for about 20 years so that will definitely be a long shot.

Amid all these blooming concerns I bought an iPad 12,9 Mini-LED, partly because I needed a brighter screen. When you put IPP and MacBook Pro 13" 2020 side by side you can see enormous difference in screen quality. It's just so much more comfortable to watch anything on iPad that I found myself using iPP more than I intended in the first place. No blooming issues whatsoever, at least for now

That is very true and it’s something I’ve been thinking as well lately. The rumor community has clung to the name M1X exactly the same way we clung to A14X before it became M1. I truly believe we will be getting something that is more than just an M1 with more cores and that it will incorporate some of the core improvements we are seeing with the A15, specifically on the graphics side.
At this point who knows? Maybe we get the M1X, maybe the M2 name will cover several chip variations or maybe the “pro” chips will be called something completely different.
That’s both the exciting thing and frustrating thing about this product launch. Somewhere in a warehouse there is fully assembled MacBook Pros just waiting for their final OS before they get boxed up for shipping… and yet we know almost nothing about them.
I’m actually curious to see if they offer any colors beyond grey or silver for these new MBPs. I feel like they still want certain color schemes to denote “consumer” vs “professional” as they do with other products.
What? You want 2x single core performance, i.e. c. 3500 Geekbench 5 score? Good luck with that.....
I presume you meant 2x multi-core performance, which we may get close to.
ARM-v9 is unlikely to make much difference. Apple M1 is already using ARM64 extension similar to those promised in ARM-v9, so I don't expect any significant change there. Maybe a couple of percent.
Change to core micro-architecture (as we've seen with the A15) should yield a useful IPC increase, or at least better efficiency.
The big changes would of course be a larger number of GPU and CPU performance cores, plus hopefully improvement in memory bandwidth and cache.

I'd love for them to give us some more colour options. The space grey and silver has been absolutely done to death by Apple although with the recent iPad Pro and the white Magic Keyboard, silver seems to be making a bit of a comeback.

It wouldn't be the first ARM based laptop+desktop with nearly the same chip. The Acorn Archimedes A5000 desktop and A4 laptop had the same chip. Though the A4 had a lower clock speed (24MHz instead of 25MHz) and could go into a low power state at 6MHz. But maybe those were different days 😄
I never actually had a mac SE, though I spent quite a bit of time on one of a friend of mine. We had the nicest looking homework in the whole school! And HyperCard! Still miss it to this day.
I really liked and enjoyed my gold Macbook 12. It was a proper gold, not rose gold or pink or whatever. I'd be happy if they reintroduced that, but of course, it would be awesome if they would introduce bolder colours like on the new iMac.
I have a feeling the new Air out next year would have similar colours like the iMac, but they will keep the boring colours for the Pros though.

I agree with the fact that more colors would be welcome. I personally think it's not gonna happen and they're going to stick to the space grey and silver. Even the matte black sounds more interesting, though the color of the green (the bold back, not the pastel muted parts) was my favorite of the new iMacs. A guy can dream!

i think that just comes down to a different management-style. iirc steve jobs pre-announced a couple of products, months before a release date was made official.
i don't know .. not really a fan of this dr jekyll/mr hyde design in a laptop. the original surface studio looked promising, but the studio laptop looks clunky and will most likely be very expensive - like all ms computers.
