I just made up a nightmare scenario about something from yesterday's "MBPs will have a notch" rumor batch... They mentioned charging the laptop will still be possible via all the USB C ports. I hoped this would be the case for convenience sake.
However, the "Apple wants to piss customers off" scenario is as such: The incoming "M1X" based MacBooks are rumored to have a lower or equivalent power requirement than existing counterparts (Intel based 16" and Intel based 13" respectively). Apple will say "people already have USB-C chargers from their old MacBooks that will charge these new laptops just fine! pros want choice over what accessories they need!", and that MagSafe is an optional accessory if you want the 'deluxe/pro' way of charging (and 'deluxe' price for MagSafe to say the least) instead of the not-so-cool old USB-C style.
By default the new Pros won't ship with chargers... bringing MagSafe back as an OPTION for charging instead of the exclusive method is the perfect Apple gaslight for why not including a charger is actually a consumer win instead of a loss.
I don't believe that scenario will actually happen but I would absolutely feel the urge to applaud the guile of Apple if they end up doing that on Monday LOL

I have never understood how people know exactly what they want before reviews are available. For such an expensive machine, I want to know what a 16 vs. 32 core GPU is capable of, etc, before I can order.
Unfortunately, if you wait for reviews, and are then ready to order, the delivery times are extended by a month. So, you get punished for trying to make an informed purchase decision. No big deal, but that seems how it works.
Mackan: I hope that some reviewers have gotten the 14” & 16” MacBook Pro’s and by Monday Apple allows them to publish their reviews so that we get some info about the new Macs but of course it’s not entirely sure we’ll get the totally unfiltered non partisan versions if the reviewers are chosen by Apple.
However I guess that some info will be objective, such as your example “what can the 32 core version do that the 16 core version will fall short on”.

I’m so happy it’s finally happening! I’ve waited 4-5 years for Apple to start getting on the right track again and start releasing Macs that I no longer have to feel I need to make too many compromises to buy. At least I really hope that is the case, reviews would have been helpful but if the computer isn’t what Apple is claiming it to be and I’m unhappy with it I guess it will go back (which has been the case with the last two computers I bought from Apple).

What do you all think the chances of the following happening are?
- Touch Bar removed or at least is optional
- MagSafe returns

I've read a lot of rumours suggesting the above and would be absolutely delighted if they are true - but are we headed for another Apple Watch Series 7 scenario where the leakers are wayyy off?

Apple could pull a huge gotcha here, but we of course have no way of knowing until the event. So for now any evidence based conclusion would have to go by the leaks and rumours we have, and they say yes to all of these.
I’d say take everything with a grain of salt. As we saw with the iMac design, the WWDC fiasco, the Apple Watch design and the AirPods 3 launch, these “leakers” have been very… off. Most of these leakers are just social media clout chasers without any real sources. Just speculating like the rest of us. The “real leakers” with Chinese manufacturing connects were probably scared off by Apples lawyers earlier this year (like love to dream).
A lot of the recent leaks (like the 14” and 16” having the same performance) are coming from Dylan who with all due respect has a 75% track record but for only 16 rumors. Compare that to 88% track record with over 400 rumors for Mark Gurman. He was also just proven wrong with the Apple Watch design and his “confirming” that the AirPods would launch with the iPhone 13. Even Mark Gurman has been doubting the M1X name lately.
IMO I think the only safe bets are: MagSafe (due to it being on the iMac and the iPhone), a much more powerful GPU compared to the M1 (especially on the 16”), a new design, Mini LED screen and a 1080p web cam. Everything else is pure speculation. An SD card slot sounds right but an HDMI sounds a little iffy especially since USB-C to HDMI cords have become more popular.
At this point who knows? We still have yet to see any benchmarks as well.
Did I just kill the discussion on page 99 less than 48 hours ‘til the event? But it’s still more than 45 hours ‘til the event, I don’t think I’ll survive this silence for that long with all this excitement I’ve built up inside of me.
I should have make my mouth shut. Come on, please start the discussion and the speculations...

Okay, what could it have or not have that would make you all not buy it?
For me, if I don't want this MBP, then I am giving up on Macs. I already sold my old one and I'm not going back to an Intel Mac. It's get this one or switch to PC laptops. The only thing that might make me do that it is if they made a portless MacBook Pro or turned the physical keyboard into one giant touchscreen. 😂
I don't think that's gonna happen. So yeah, I'm getting it either way.

One thing that could ruin it for me (but is unlikely in the extreme I guess?) Butterfly Keyboard 🤢 I'd also hate a touchscreen KB (a lot of people thought that was where butterfly was leading). But they're back to having a normal, well praised KB now, the way it should be. I don't see the point of courting more controversy over something that needs to satisfy 99% of people, not just 50%!

Ah, of course! Forgot how allergic people are to these tiny little convinces, I do however have no idea how ugly or how bad I’d will blend in with the screen but I honestly don’t care as I really really need a new computer but I guess I can still enjoy the big show about the little notch. 😉
Man I’m so hyped Monday can’t come fast enough! I really am hoping orders open up right after the event.
My 2019 16” runs as hot as a stove top with horrible battery life and loud fans so I’m pretty much guaranteed to upgrade regardless just to get away from Intel once and for all.
That being said, what would make me not get one at launch would be if Apple puts only 16 GPU cores in the $2399 16”… That would be a big turn off.
16 GPU cores is not enough to justify the upgrade (it would be barely better than the nearly 2 years old $2799 16”) which means I would need to shell out close to $3K for a better GPU version. That would definitely make me hesitate and wait for reviews before buying even if it means waiting longer. It would also be a horrible value when compared to the GPU performance you can get from competitors around that same price range.
However, I still believe the base 16” will get a binned version of the 32 GPU core version of the M1X which should give somewhere near 3060m performance (3070m for the full 32 cores) which is good enough for me.

That’s true! And if those schematics turn out correct the leakers we’re completely off about the more flat design. Those schematics show a MacBook that is even rounder than what we have now! I actually really like that design. Looks like a 2021 version of the old PowerBook.
Sheesh this has been a rollercoaster of a release cycle. The 2016 redesign was so much different. I think we had a pretty good idea months before about what it would look like (all usb-c, touchbar, etc). In this case, we are under 48 hours from announcement and we still getting conflicting rumors

Somewhere there's probably reviewers with units laughing at all this talk about a notch or no-notch. I'm looking at you Mr Gruber, and Mr Liss.

that's what is interesting.
IF (big if) apple already has review machines out there, they have actually lived up to their word and not said a peeep.
But, what could be happening is that review macs go out monday. They are embargoed from talking about it.
Then they test for a few days.
Then sales open friday and their embargo is removed.
PS. re: Mr Liss, that goober ain't getting one. no way.

I'm pretty sure someone from ATP and John Gruber have been given review units of MacBook Pros in advance of release alongside people like MKBHD in recent times. Those guys are all major Mac users and the exact sort of people Apple want to be reviewing these machines.
It might be that because this is such a major deal for Apple they've not put machines out this week past, but hold them back until Monday. But its also possible they've held briefings already as I can't remember the last time one of those respected bloggers/journalists leaked something.
