ARGH! the service from my old iphone is off, but my new one still says waiting for activation.... anyone having issues?

did you guys have to call att or anything? I just plugged it in after turning my old iphone off, it made me agree to stuff enter last 4 of my ssn etc. and its been like 20 minutes.
still wondering why I got this from att then if you don't have to call!
How to Activate Your iPhone:
1. Charge your phone/device following the instructions provided in the user's guide.
2. Power on your phone/device.
3. Call 1-866-499-8008 Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.9:00 p.m. Eastern Time or Saturday from 11:00 a.m.8:00 p.m. Eastern Time to activate your phone/device. You may be asked for any of the following information:
* Wireless Phone Number
* AT&T Premier Order Number
* 15 digit IMEI number
* 20-21 digit SIM card number
Follow these additional activation steps for your iPhone:
1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/iTunes to your Mac or PC.
2. Connect iPhone to your Mac or PC using the included cable and dock.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to sync your iPhone.

So, is the consensus that we do NOT have to call AT&T? We just plug it into iTunes and answer the questions?
looks like the first part is a standard cookie cutter instruction.
whereas the bottom for the iphone is specific to you.
just connect the phone to itunes and follow the instructions.
at&t might run a slightly different ship, but from apple you plug it in and go.... the only reason I would see someone would need to do this is if the phone wasn't tied to the number however I believe they all are.
Istarted my activation about 15 minutes ago. Followed the instructions on the flyer included in the box (ATT). At the end the activation web site said it could take from 15 minutes to 4 hrs. Am syncing with iTunes now. Will see, but mine is taken quite a bit longer than 2 minutes. But that is all relative of course.
Mine activated in less than a minute
+1 Same for mine and the wifey's and we got the text page notification within about 10 minutes. 9:45 AM PT.
it does seem to be specific to att. they also included activation links in the order email and it has to be activated with them before connecting to itunes

I got mine around 11:30 EST. Plugged it in went through the activation through iTunes. Completely synched. 1:06 Still waiting for activation. I ordered mine from AT&T. Called and even went to the store and both of them told me to wait until tomorrow. WTF??

Just got off the phone with AT&T. This woman was much more helpful. Just had to provide her with my IMEI and SIM number (boy that SIM was hard to get out). Yes. Yes. No. No. Bam up and running 15 mins later!
When I originally called AT&T the guy was wondering how I get my phone so early and didn't think he could help me. When I went into the store their iTunes was not letting them activate.
I got mine around 11:30 EST. Plugged it in went through the activation through iTunes. Completely synched. 1:06 Still waiting for activation. I ordered mine from AT&T. Called and even went to the store and both of them told me to wait until tomorrow. WTF??

Dialing that doesn't work on a non-activated iPhone. The next step it says to do is to remove the back of the device and look under the battery. i hope no idiots try to do that with the iphone.

I know this sounds like a dumb q but just to be sure, (I ordered from apple), I plug into itunes and follow directions. I leave my old phone alone. Once I'm activated, my old 3gs will still work for everything but making calls, right? (I want to clear it for resale). I have backed up my old phone already.

weird
evidently my first call to the premier activation #, which was cut off right as some lady started talking, actually automatically activated my phone. didn't even have to give her any info. plugged my iphone 4 into itunes and it was immediately activated.
