One can never keep up and tech moves quickly each year.
But with reports of an A14x mini-LED iPad Pro only 6 months away, it's making it difficult to pull the trigger on the current 11" iPP.

Frankly, my needs aren't even great enough to warrant getting such a beast. But it's a nice to have.

So who else is waiting for an A14x iPP?

There are rumors that the 12.9" will be the only Pro getting mini-LED, which could mean the 11" Pro getting discontinued at the next update, especially with the new Air having much the same form factor. If you are set on the 11" size and the current one is more than powerful enough for you, I would probably consider just getting it now.

I am.

I've resigned myself to spending $1.5-2K on the iPad (1TB Cellular, no accessories) but if I'm doing that, I want a really, really big jump over my 2017 Pro.

I was looking at the 11" but have been thinking along the lines of an iPad Pro being a laptop replacement. So potentially going with the larger 12.9"
This led me to thinking of going big and waiting for the A14X.

The fact Apple waited 18 months to update the pro .....to a very mediocre update seems beyond obnoxious. Granted the 2018 iPad was a beast way ahead of its time. Why didn’t they just wait till this event and release the 2020 pro with A14X?

I might see myself upgrading from my current 11” 2020 to the 12,9” A14X.
I’m using my iPad Pro as my main computer now and would like to benefit from a larger screen.

Mind, a benefit of the 2020 A12Z/6GB refresh is it pushed pricing down on 2018 iPad Pros. Without it, we likely wouldn't have these awesome deals on the 2018 model. :D

I pulled the trigger on a 2020 iPad Pro. I'm coming from an iPad Mini 3, so it'll be a huge step up. I need it by November for work and was hoping for a new mini Pro, but it wasn't in the cards.

The hypothetical A14X and mini LEDs were very interesting, but timing didn't work out.

I am definitely waiting. Like you my needs don’t warrant such a beast BUT it is nice to have!

Theres a shot that the pro gets a spec bump still before the years out. I could see them adding the A14x (no mini led) if they introduce the chip for a MacBook or something.

Even if the A12Z is more powerful than the A14 in the Air, I think Apple have a marketing problem with the Pro now. Most people just assume 14 is more than 12, so the Pro isn't even the Pro anymore. I don't think it was the case, or at least as bad, with the A13 vs A12Z. Hopefully that pushes Apple along.

It is a bit of a marketing challenge but the target audience for the iPad Pro are those who likely will research and see the benefits over the Air.

It’s a long shot to see another update to the iPad Pro so soon.

I suppose it could come with the iPhone 12 launch, but that would just look like they don’t have their ducks in a row.

More likely spring 2021 with mini-LEDs.

I'm not waiting for A14X. I am waiting for Mini-LED and 5G... which I guess means I'm actually waiting for A14X too. :p

I also bought a new-in-box 2018 11" iPP ~6mos ago when the 2020 11" iPP was released at a nice discount.

I agree with the sentiment that the 2020 iPP is in a weird spot right now. Even if technically the A12Z processor is faster than the A14, it's clear that it's 2-gens old now, and I would feel weird paying full price today for the 2020 iPP. This often occurs with Apple products given they don't discount models, even if it's old, as long as it's the latest model.

Can't argue with the argument of 2020 iPP being "good enough" for current uses, that it comes with other features (like ProMotion and quad-speakers) over the 2020 iPad Air, etc. But it still feels odd to drop full price on it today when processor is likely to get upgraded to the A14X in the "not-so-distant future"...

I’m hoping those upgrades coincide with a new (old?) case design with slab/square sides that’s reinforced for the larger sizes the Pros come in, to prevent screen responsiveness issues that have been seen.

My 2018 seems to be pretty good in the speed department. Even so, I am looking forward to the next iPad Pro. The 2020 version just didn't offer enough to justify upgrading to the latest greatest. I'm going to hang in there, and pass on the 2018 to a member of my family.

If the next update takes too long I probably would be tempted by a new Apple ARM laptop if that comes out of the gate first. Okay, I'm fickle when it comes to Apple products 🤣

Does anybody think it's weird that for like a week or two all ipad pro 12.9 don't ship til mid oct coincidentally right around the last apple event? Quiet chip 5g update?

I’m actually curious about that situation. If it did get a refresh, would they just ship people the new refreshed version or would they cancel those orders and expect people to order the new one?

A quiet 5G update is not going to happen.

If you order the old one, it will eventually ship. You would have to return it to get the new one.

However, I think it's extremely unlikely we will get a new iPad Pro model in October.
