MP 7,1 Waiting for Mac Pro 7,1 A1991 (no more)

5,1 is too old and the price is too high for almost 4 yrs old hardware. I also do not like to connect a lot of devices externally.
There is no choice at all except Windows. I can use my PC for a while and hope Apple will have something better this year.

5,1 is the last model with the G5/cheesegrater style enclosure 6,1 is the cylinder/tube. You're likely to find an adequate 5,1-especially coming from a 1,1, from refurbished or used sources-for a much more palatable price.
It was my mistake. I just had a look on ebay. But I doubt the price will be high to ship to Hong Kong as it is very heavy. The general price is USD1000 to 2500. It is not cheap and I don't think it is worth to pay such price as Apple may obsolete it next year.

I was a little bit worried for our nMPs at first, but it seems that you said it in general, and possibly for the older Macs.

This may well be the case or not, fact is that over 300W of heat are handled by a single heatsink and fan in that system.
Well, there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon after Tim Cook was quoted as saying there were desktops due in 2017.
Of course that's typical Apple-style non-specific language, but what else did we expect, right? 🙂
iMac's a given, so we're looking at the Mac Pro, and the Mac mini. By all accounts, because of battery issues with the MacBook Pro, engineers were taken from other projects to help, so that may have hampered things a bit for the desktop lineup.
The Mac mini is due a form factor change, and with all the advances in the last couple of years, this could be a really exciting project.
The Mac Pro though is a tricky one. As with the G4 cube, could Apple turn on their heels and decide it was a mistake? Would they try and re-engineer the SFF design? Or cancel it altogether.. could be any of these really.
I would love a proper tower again, bit I think it's a foregone conclusion Apple is moving into condensed, non-user serviceable devices.
I'd love to see a design that had CPUs and GPUs both as daughterboards, (the older Mac Pros shows this can be done).
Of course that would affect the number of TB ports on the back, but since Apple already do this with their new MacBook Pro models, it wouldn't be a massive leap.
Would be good, as people could potentially have combinations based around;
1 CPU 1 GPU would probably seen as cutting into iMac/Mac mini margins, but 2 CPUs as standard would be cool (they did this before too).

apple needs a big tower workstation to keep the pro market. And if need be drive TB video off an low end build in pci / pci-e X1 video chip. And have slots for the real video cards.

Intel may not be exactly a PC company anymore. Many months ago I have written that Intel will shift its focus from components to devices. What this means is that Intel will focus itself, and do everything they can do in shifting custom build PC market into custom designed PC market. Intel wants people to buy BGA parts, rather than LGA.
Its called moving with the times. Upgrade'ability of your computer can become two things. A premium, or a "thing of the past".

Just wondering, keeping in mind Cook's words where he says they're working on "great desktops"... When do you guys think they are most likely to make an announcement, also considering the roadmaps of CPUs and GPUs (and all the relative speculations of course)?
I could see nMP Mid 2017 with Naples and Vega.
But with the engineering teams ripped apart I'm not sure they had the time or the resources to put it together.
And they would have managed to keep it all very quiet, but Apple can do that most of the time.
I'm still hoping they didn't scrap it.
Also, I hope the rTBD will come back, although it seems unlikely now.
The picture is not good with Apple now. The rMBP is great and all but the soldered SSD and the battery issues do raise some questions. Rumors that the panel will go IZGO this year, let's see. TB3 only is no issue to me, only they could have included a TB3->MagSafe adapter, just to be safe.
The iMac might be a good machine once it's updated, but I don't care much for AIOs.

BGA = amd king. Good luck selling $500-$700 MB + fixed cpu boards on intel with less choice. The server market is not going to go BGA any time soon.
Worth noting they managed to keep the 2013 Mac Pro pretty quiet, and the usual suspects were running around here claiming the Mac Pro was dead because no one had heard anything.

If you mean a Retina Thunderbolt Display, it did get released, just not through Apple.
That's what I meant, the nMP was one of those cases where everyone stayed tight lipped.

By the time it was discontinued, the T-Bolt display was an utter embarrassment.
Apple directives are paying the iPhone/Mac fiasco, nether fulfill market/user/profitability expectations.
The tbMBP worst point are the battery and the soldered SSD, Apple goes too far on making it light and non-upgradeable/serviceable hope they learn the lesson, the Battery issue wont e solved by IGZO neither by KabbLake need a hardware revision to accommodate a bigger battery, also the SSD (w/o intel optane option) also raised concerns for those users with heavy disk i/o needs they dont want to scrap the machine or being forced to use an external ssd.
Also there is the Sub-Par performance, why Apple dont compares Mac performance with PC performance? simple in each and every test the mac loses to its PC category leader.

The soldering of any of the main and typically, easily replaceable components is absurd. How many of us have woke up with dead RAM Or had a hard drive failure? Used a battery until it was gone and replace it (I know not soldered, but glued down like mo-fo apparently)? I just don't by computers that once Apple care runs out, a $25-100 part failure could brick your $2500 machine. No f-ing way Apple, sorry.
I'm not so sure Apple had much of a contribution on the LG display, even on the inside.
Clearly not on the outside, it's ugly as hell.
They might have helped with the testing/certification for the rMBP but do you really think they designed the electronics that drive the display?
They might have set the specs, a 5K HDR panel with DCI-P3 ('ish) color gamut and TB3 interface.
Now, TB3 is known, only thing that could make a difference would be how the data is sent. Over 2 DP 1.2 channels in one cable or Alt Mode? That's something we still don't know I guess.
Why was the TBD an embarrassment? Even today manufacturers are releasing 2.5K displays that are far worse. OK, it didn't feature the latest tech inside but what ports exactly do you use from your monitor? I know I don't use any, others might of course. Having free ports on your machine why use the ones on the monitor, if you know the performance will be worse?
We still see monitors with USB 2 ports built in just released, right?
I'd still buy it today over many out there.

The current mac Pro situation is primarily really annoying for one big reason: The display issue.
The machine is still going strong and doing most tasks with ease, especially since most software isn't really optimized for all the cores (Looking at you Adobe!!!)
But ok, I got two TBDs with the Mac pro. But now I want 5k. But is it possible? No. Dell discontinued their UP2715k 5k Dual DP solution (got that answer on the phone today). The HP 5k is nowhere to be found online either (in Germany).
So what 5k Displays are there? Only the LG, wich supports only TB3. Or TB2 via adapter via upscaled 4k->5k, wich supposedly will look nasty (but no one on these forums cares to test it and upload some pictures.)
4k doesn't cut it, cause we can only run a 27" 4k in weird 1,5x scaled 1440p mode, which isnt native retina.
Plus there's not a SINGLE glossy 4k Display with a beautiful edge to edge design like the TBD.
So what's gonna happen?
There HAS to be a new mac pro later this year with TB3. It just has to be. Then hopefully there'll be more displays like that new LG 5k with TB3 as well.
But still, I seriously don't get why apple didn't care to simply take the iMacs display and put it into the exact same enclosure just without the chin??
What difference would it have made to them? That way, we could at least look forward to the new mac pro, knowing we could then use that as our 5k primary screen.
I think the LG is OK, but it's not edge to edge, but with the extremely ugly bezels and the forehead and it's all made out of plastic. Still I wouldnt hesitate a second buying it right now if my mac pro could drive it.
