MP 7,1 Waiting for Mac Pro 7,1 A1991 (no more)

My guess: start for preorder on the 15th, shipping in quantities in February 2020.

I'll save my money and keep my 5,1 until it completely breaks apart ... 🙂

Yeah, Intel slashed X prices in half, almost.
I wonder if Xeon will also get a significant cut, with the new Epyc coming up. But I guess even if it does, Apple will keep it.
 
Xeon W prices are already set, no way they will be cut in half right now. Likely they will reduce the price for next generation.

If AMD continues its encroachment, it's definitely likely. But I can just as easily see Intel only price-competing in the -X market, since that's where it's more vulnerable. The people who were interested in sticking i9s in their machines weren't going to buy Mac Pros anyhow.
 
Prices are set, and it's unlikely they change, at least until Intel takes a severe beating when the WS TR are out. Remember, AMD has specific WS SKUs for TR and if Intel can somewhat, at least in the short term, take the beating in the server space, will they hold it on the WS? Maybe not a giant market there, but still.

Actually it is the server market (Xeon) that is the bread and butter for Intel. High-end desktops are nothing more than a halo product with low volume.
 
Xeon is where Intel is making their best profits so I would be shocked if they cut prices significantly, regardless of what AMD drops.

HEDT is a more competitive market since there is a lot of custom BTO and self-assembled so pricing is more sensitive.

Xeon W 3200 series is already set. That doesn't mean Intel cannot release a W 2200 series in December or January (after initial bubble demand for these i9 109__X's drops off a bit). If Intel is maxed out at 14nm fab capacity the perhaps they won't.

They have only left a small corner for a W 2200 series. The new i9s have the same 48 PCI-e lanes as the 2100 series. The Max memory is bit down at 256GB ( versus 512GB, but up from the previous i9s 128 GB ). And no ECC.

Dell 5820 and HP Z4 have logic boards options for the X or W 2100 series. It would be a bit odd if Intel was only going to update "half" of those products. Those 2100 series variations will have the exact same pricing issues versus AMD as the X series does. Intel may want to "walk away" from those products for 10-12 months until they have something better to offer and hope most folks in that window bite on the X series option. They could get away with that, but lost share is going to be hard to get back.


But the W 3200 can't be the "solution" because they actually drive prices higher ; not lower. So they don't solve the core issue.

( there is a cheaper 8 W 3223 that gives away clock speed to hit the lower price. $749 .... which unsurprisingly is the path that Apple took . The Core i9-10900X at 3.7 base and 4.5-4.7 Turbo rolls past Apple's entry with 10 cores and about a $150 cheaper price in what will be about $2-3K priced systems. More cores and clock at half the system costs. )

AMD's Epyc encroaches on the Intel's Xeon SP line up also. (AMD is on track to about double their share there .... that is encroachment. ) Same with the upcoming AMD Threadripper.
This new X pricing impacts two Macs. The iMac Pro at bit more directly, but also the first 25% of the Mac Pro line up also.

If Intel were to ship a update of W 2200 series the iMac Pro would be the primary candidate and would be in even deeper problems of justifying the price point it is at currently. If the iMac Pro drops substantively in price the Mac Pro is not completely decoupled.

Apple is drinking tons of Cupertino kool-aid if they can't see how this will deepen the deficit they have with hard core Nvidia fans ( especially those that only need 1-2 Nvidia GPU slots ). Likewise with folks who have more OS neutral application workflow.

This won't impact the hard core FCPX and LogicX folks who want lots of PCI-e slots market much, but that probably is not the totality of the Mac Pro target market. ( a sizable chunk but not the whole target. ) At the edges of that market though (and especially at the lower end marked out by the new Mac Pro parameters ) Apple is probably going to take some lumps.

Apple hooking the next Mac Pro to Xeon SP like pricing is not going to be problem free going forward.

Xeon SP is where Intel has dug a deeper moat (optane memory , deployed server motherboards with firmware upgrades, etc. ) . Xeon D also. However, the Xeon E they are in deep trouble as with the X series.

In the Xeon W space it is a bit split. They have no W 2200 option yet so that is a substantive problem. They aren't going to do well there at all if they continue to leave that empty for an extended period of time. Do nothing is not going to be a winning strategy.

The Xeon W 3200 has some winning upgrades aspects but it comes with a pack size trade off. ( it is bigger).

They won't cut list SP pricing but Intel is going to have to hand out deeper discounts to keep Xeon SP going.

It isn't that is more competitive but also because Intel is more stuck in the mud. They can't get around being stuck at 14nm by expanding the package size much ( e.g., two dies like will probably do with Cooper Lake and Ice Lake ).

Intel is having to cut prices here because it is basically the same thing they sold 2 years ago. ( bug fixes and have taken off some of the kneecapping limiters on the features that were always present on the die. Max memory , number of PCI-e lanes , etc. )

Intel doesn't need to publish new list prices. They can accomplish the same thing with bigger volume discounts....

(Honestly I don't think it makes much sense for Apple to drop prices if they get discounts versus throwing more stuff in to justify said prices.)

Maybe they’ll have the Pro Display (cheaper version) built into the iMac Pro..

I don't think the iMac ( pro or otherwise) escaped the trade war tariffs. (there are some printed circuit boards general roll backs but there are probably others that are still hit). If there is an Intel price cut Apple would probably throw it on that ( directly in the USA and indirectly elsewhere ).

burying it in volume discount won't escape the end of quarter fiscal report. temporary obscure from public view doesn't really matter once hit public reporting requirements.

True. Trade war crap is just dumb and depressing so I try not to think about it until I have to. But always nice to see chips for potential new machines.
 
Tired of the way Apple manipulates and disrespects its users. They don't care one bit for us. We are just chumps to make their top shareholders rich.

Intel cut the price of their 10 series chips and I'm going to build a beastly Cascade Lake system with WINDOWS. I don't care if I lose some macOS features. I'm just tired of Apple's false promises, bugs, slow ****** buggy graphics drivers, slow APIs compared to Vulkan or Direct X. The fact they still sold that 6,1 at full price in 2019 should tell you that they spit on us and don't care if they shove us into our graves.
