yup mine gets boiling at the back too, right up the top. same with my 2007 iMac, its meant to do that. if you feel further down the bottom its hardly even hot, more of a warm heat. its all perfectly normal haha so dont worry 🙂

Don't worry, that is normal. The aluminium case is a heat sink.

This is my first post on this website. I have read all 24 pages of this topic, and I just wanted to also write about my story.

I, like some members on here, ordered through DJ's to take advantage of 48 months interest free terms. I ordered a custom order 27'' i7 iMac with 8 gig Ram and Apple Care at my local DJ's on the 3rd of November.

After reading some scary things on this website, which have come from dronus (I commend you for writing what you have, and taking the issue further with DJ's management) I thought I should call today and see what the heck is going on with my order. So, I called and quoted my order number. The lady told me that it isn't in yet (DUH), So, I kindly asked her to contact their Apple rep and ask them about my order.
She got someone to call me back shortly. This was what he told me: "Apple are experiencing a shortage of i5 and i7 processors, and basically haven't had any at all. So, your iMac is being built but is just waiting for your processor to be put in". 😡

We all know this is a lie. Clearly they have them, why are other people ordering them online and getting them within 2 weeks? Lies Apple! LIES!
So, I told him to tell his Apple Rep to find out more, because I know for a fact this is bull.... lets see if he gets back to me today. Highly doubtful.

I'm getting quite sick of this...
But on the plus side, to those who have ordered and recieved their iMac's, congrats guys!! 😀 Hope they are great.

Delay seems to be even worse!

It seems it is about to get worse. I think we need to unleash some serious fury against Apple on the phone as this is simply and totally beyond a joke when online orders are shipped within a couple of days!!

He has been speaking to Apple all morning about the Quad core orders and it seems that we are looking at a January 2010 ETA. It seems that even the C2D models are not going to be shipped to stores till January 2010. If you are keen to wait, you are looking to wait till next year. Otherwise there is a high chance you'll get your order before Christmas if you order from the Apple website.

you know whats wierd...

when you go to open System Prefs->Sharing and it gives you this error.

"You can’t open Sharing preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."

how odd. i have yet to find anybody else with this error.

update on that, if anybody else has the same problem simply do a reinstall using the disc that came with the computer. none of my settings/files were lost so its worth it. i should compare startup times (33 seconds was the average using the OS that it came with).

That was actually me, however they did say "mid december" but by the time it would get into your hands it would be after christmas which is January.

So far so good. It didn't initially recognise my Crucial RAM, so I swapped them around and now all good. I got an error when first starting iTunes, so I just downloaded another copy and installed - now working. Much snappier!

No problems with the screen, well not that I can tell yet... Will have more of a play and report back.

It is really disappointing that apple are telling DJ's these lies about the CPU being unavailable. It is also disapointing that, even after all of my calls and the calls of others that DJ's are not pushing the point with Apple.

Breaking it down it will be interesting to see where the root cause of the problem is...

We know that Apple (for some stupid reason) have put some of the reseller partner channels into constrained and blocked all orders coming through. This contrainment should have finished by now and it it getting obvious that if it is stil in place now it is unwarranted as online orders are shipping pretty much immediately.

We dont know why Apple are telling DJ's that the reason why they are not supplying them with units is due to a CPU usage. This is a straight up LIE.

We dont know why Apple reps are telling DJ's that no stock of i5 or i7 have shipped into AU for anyone. Or are they just saying no stock has shipped for DJ's?

I will post my findings tommorow after meeting the apple rep at the store. has anyone else been able to meet an apple rep in a store, and pointed out to them their lies about no shipping yet?

Being that apple have now passed their "Ships: November" promise, and DJ's have passed their "Delivery date: 31 November" the gloves can come off. Especially with all of the lies they have been spinning...

Well, as I suspected, the guy from DJ's didn't call me back. Guess ill be bugging them tomorrow now! 🙂

I look forward to hearing what the Apple rep has to say when you talk to them tomorrow. Hopefully, they can get our orders moving and accept the fact that they are blatantly lying to us, or, we can get some form of compensation for missing the 'November' shipping.

Excellent, keep calling them. Just think, if you tie up a salespersons time for 30mins - and so do i, and so does another 20 of the hundreds of other people waiting for these orders everyday, thats 11 hours of time per day DJ's is using to chase apple and not sell other goods. Surely their sales managers will then take an interest in what is going on... Hey.. my friend is a lawyer and loves passive resistance 🙂

For apple reps to continue to state that no i5 or i7 has shipped into AU shows either complete ignorance to the parent company they work for, and the technology they represent; or a desperate attempt to deceive DJ's into thinking this situation is acceptable as it is out of their control. My personal opinion is that they want us to cancel our orders with the resellers and go straight to them. They also want us to learn a lesson, and change our shopping habits to only ever buy from them the first time from now on.

Bugger that, im sticking to my guns. Until Apple can give me 48 months interest free and a shop in Adelaide where i can go and pick up purchases / drop off warrenty jobs they are going to have to use resellers. The resellers employ local people in their stores, use local transport companies to transport their goods, and support local charities and organisations. I think we all know *someone* who works in one of these industries...

If anyone else is going into a DJ's store soon, enquire about the quad core. If you get given the CPU/Video card excuse, pull up this forum and show them that they are here in AU. Also ask them to show this to their apple rep..

Enough of a rant from me for now, keep up the good work asking questions, and lets see what tommorow brings...

I seem to be in the same boat any many others. I ordered an i7 with 8Gig from Myers in Brisbane on the 25 OCT. At the time I purchase I was told to expect the retail launch to be the 16th Nov, however because I had a custom order I could possibly expect it a little earlier. At least i did get a call on the 16th to tell me that there was a delay. I have contacted Myers a number of time since, to get the same stories as everyone else. the latest advised date being mid December. I spoke with the Apple rep on Sunday, only to be informed of the new date and that there are basically no quad cores in Australia.
I am tempted to cancel and re-order, however i expect i would only be cutting of my nose to spite my face. It's just a pity that Apple have such good products..... at least they will have to stop running the "high customer satisfaction" ads. Surely Steve Jobs must be aware of this ongoing issue. Pull your finger out Steve!!!

What everyone is saying on this discussion thread is about the delay with resellers in Australia, not Apple Online/Phone orders.

Perhaps someone should start a new thread and call it Australian Resellers Still Waiting for i5 & i7 ?

I placed my (second) i7 order with Apple via 133622 number as well and was told the same thing about phone orders being more swift.
And the agent was right, it was processed with lightning speed.

The whole CPU shortage spiel is a crock. This is not a new processor, it has been out for a while, and Intel would be ramped up for full scale production. I am sure Apple would have had thousands of these suckers on pre-order anyway. Not like Apple just turned around and said "Oh yeah, by the way Intel, we need 500,000 i7's this week, and maybe the same in i5's."

I find it amazing the these resellers are being shafted so royally by Apple. Surely the initial rush , and backlog of pre-orders has subsided, especially seeing as you can get one online in a week. They are obviously not backed up. So why apple continues to neglect the massive void that these resellers in experiencing, is totally beyond me.

Lets face it in the business world, all decisions come down to money. All I can think is the business model for these resellers is not worth Apples time, and they would rather fill their own orders first. Maybe the discount the resellers get is too big, and Apple is filling its own orders first, because there is more profit in it for them.

Spot on. By selling direct Apple keeps the ENTIRE profit margin to themselves rather than having to go via resellers so that's enough motivation to put them all at the back of the queue. If the things are selling like hot cakes, Apple wants to milk the stock for maximum benefit.

Extremely poor practise and has surely made this apple fan quite bitter about our treatment

Unfortunately most people who have ordered through resellers have paid a deposit, or have cancellation fees. They would have to argue their way out of these.
Also, the resellers offer attractive incentives like 48mths interest free and bonus points which can be used to buy other things.
Many people dont have $3000 cash laying around to buy a computer, especially so close to the end of the year, so thats why they go with the resellers.
I noticed on crapples website they are now offering 120 days 0% interest. Far from the 4 years others are offering, but maybe an indication that they are looking into nipping that cherry in the bud.

Im not cancelling mine, im gonna follow this thru, ive waited over a month now, worse case scenario whats another couple of weeks? Hopefully all the problems have been sorted out by now too.

Keep up calling your reseller and asking for information, and post your experiences here for others to learn from. There is relief in knowing you are not alone, and hopefully together we can get these orders filled and sitting on your desk soon!

All standard configurations are built and a minimal supply would be kept - Apple would forecast how many they sell based on historical data (MRP software or the like) - there would basically be enough stock to cover forecasted demand + small safety margin.

As for non standard configurations (commonly called BTO), they are built in the factory and then shipped straight out, Apple wouldn't make bulk configurations of all the different BTO options as some of these wouldn't sell in high enough volumes to warrant the plant time and storage space.

This is a well educated guess, so what really happens could be different to this, but I doubt it is much different.

Phone orders would only be quicker because you're bypassing the reseller, which by the looks of it is supplied last - Apple would place a higher priority on filling all orders placed by consumers direct to Apple, as these are likely to be the larger volume of sales. All in all it just sucks if you're not in a position to order direct through Apple.

The latest comments for me in NZ buying through a retailer are;

There is no stock available to the retail channel at this time. We are unable to confirm when stock would be available to the retail channel. Stock is available through the online store and you can order through there if you want one quickly.

Any dates given by the stores are only guesses and no stock has been made available to them at this time.

So I guess you're mostly right until Apple catch up with online orders they won't fill the retail channel. And of course I'd hazard a guess it's not just online here but worldwide so they'd be shuffling stock to fill online orders worldwide and until the global online/applestore demand dies those of us ordering through retailers will be sitting on our hands. And of course getting the latest potentially problem free units.

I have been given off the record guesses of ETA but they state there is no basis for the guess.

And this is after discussions with the Apple people. I can see why Apple would do this but would they wait until all onlines catch up or at some point do they decide they've made us wait too long and start filling the retail channel.

I am amongst the first orders when the retails start to ship.

(And please don't tell me I'm getting my order after you blokes in Oz. That would just insult to injury.)😕😱🙄

Honestly.. just registered to vent. I was an apple fan but now Im really pissed off. To order early, 26th OCT via my reseller mac247... then to see people ordering over a month AFTER and get their machine BEFORE mine really is dissapointing. I'm a journalist and I'm writing the story up now, and I assure you all, this story will be heard. I have tried to contact apple for an answer and there is only dead ends, I have given them a very small timeline to respond before this heads to the editor.

For all the 'hardcore' apple fans who did order straight away, now watching how this is unfolding, it really is disheartening.

It is quite simple – order date priority otherwise there will obviously really angry customers. The internet connects everyone these days.. nothing is missed.
