So I walked by my local Apple store on my lunch hour, and there were several hundred people standing in line waiting, the line snaked around the corner and went on even further.

Dumb question - What happens the inventory is exhausted? Do they send the people away, or do they need to camp out for another day?

Some Apple employees will make an announcement at the line and let others know that if they are there for a particular product, it's no longer available in store. Especially at larger iPhone launches, this has been the practice in my area.

I work at 8 am so I decided to stop by at my Apple store which is literally 2 minutes away from my house and I usually walk to work. Line was long, but I didn't stay long because I really needed to go to work. Got done with work at 1 pm and went straight to the apple store. I originally wanted Space Gray Verizon 256 GB model but they only had Silver Verizon 256 GB model available (they had plenty). So I decided to take it. I still have one on pre-order (space gray verizon 256 GB, which I will not yet cancel). If I see they have the space gray model, i'll return the silver and exchange it for the Space Gray.

By the time I got there, there was no line.
