Wake Up problems

My Macbook Pro has problems after waking up after long periods of sleep. While I can sympathise with this trait in humans, I don't expect it from the world of machines. Often the sound won't work until I place a headphone jack in the socket and pull it out. More recently it crashes and needs to be rebooted by holding down the power button. My notebook is a late 2008 15" version of the Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8. Thanks for any help.😀
