Just to update this, i got out with no etf. Wrpte to the ceo and got a call the next day. All fees waived. Now i need to unlock my phones, which att wont do. Account is not in good standing i guess since it was canceled.

Well you probably can't port over your phone numbers now, but if you go to a T-Mobile company store (not one of the authorized retailers) they should be able to help you unlock them.

AT&T iPhones?

Go to ebay and look for "att iphone unlock"

You sent them your IMEI and you're unlocked.

If the account is NOT in good standing, AT&T will block those phones from their network and blacklist them. TMobile and them share a database. Can't sell the phones or anything. Even if you unlock it, it won't work on TMobile. Would only work overseas.

so my phones are worthless at this point?

Basically yes. Unless you pay the ETF. Best way would be to clear the ETF, and then sell the phones to cover your loss. Then buy new ones off CL or something.

Switching carriers in the middle of a contact really doesn't save anyone money. The fees always pile up.

You could also sell them with a clear advisory of bad IMEI; someone might want them for parts or they ought to work overseas. Reduced value / higher risk sale so still may be better to settle ETF and get them cleared.

a bad IMEI iPhone isn't worth anything. I've seen bad iPhone5s go for under $200.

Has anyone tried both StraightTalk and T-Mobile? I've got ST now but the market has become more competitive since their debut and T-Mo seems like they might be able to beat the price for the same features.

You must be doing well that $200 is nothing to you. For most people that's still a good bit of money.

Quick look on ebay though shows plenty selling for $400+:
and these are just on the first page of sold 16GB AT&T iphone5's from today

I'm sure you can find some that sell for under $200, but the going rate appears to be higher.

Let me clarify, i didnt just leave without paying my bill. I emailed the ceo, and his secretary canceled my contract at no fee. So i dont owe anyone anything.

So in theory they shouldn't be blacklisted.

Maybe check IMEI via Swappa or if you have a friend with the same phone on AT&T try his SIM in your phones to see if they'll register.

If AT&T won't unlock, try one of the 3rd party unlock services.
