The iPhone 4 was released in June of 2010/February of 2011 (GSM/CDMA).
The iPhone 4S was released in October of 2011.
The next iPhone is expected to be released this fall.
If you were to buy an iPhone today, you'd be asked which model you would like, followed by color (black or white), followed by memory size (varies from 8GB all the way to 64GB).

Very subjective. Do you need more storage? Don't care about new features and just want any iPhone? Want the latest and greatest? Do you intend to get lots of apps? A lot of variables. I normally suggest the 32GB 4S but it really depends.

I'd get a 4S then sell it on eBay when the new iPhone 5 comes out. You will get more money for the 4S. Or just keep it and be only a generation behind but enjoy all the features the new ios6 will bring. iOS should be out for the 4s this fall and some features will be missing on the 4

The better analogy would be, "I wanna buy a Chevrolet. I'm very confused by the model. Can anyone suggest which one I should get?"
He's not looking for a suggestion on a cell phone but rather which iPhone.
