I'm wanting to get a new Apple TV to replace my Apple TV 3 but am hesitant after hearing that a new one will come out this year. I don't care about 4K, but what does worry me is support for the device. When the new one is released, will the Apple TV 4 be abandoned and no longer get new apps like the Apple TV 3 or is it more likely to still see updates since it's now a platform and not just a oneoff device.

Not that I know if a new unit will be out this year, but if you don't care about the "rumored" 4k update then I wouldn't worry about it. Apple has put a lot of effort into tvOS and you should be able to update the current 4th gen model OS for quite a while.

If you want it now then my advice is typically to go ahead and get it now. I'm even more comfortable giving that advice if you aren't interested in the main feature an upgrade will bring. There is no reason to think the gen 4 would be abandoned as far as support for at least a few years so I wouldn't worry there either.
