Use an audio editing program and append 20 minutes of silence to the end of every track you use in your lessons.

You will be able to use the iPod and put all the tracks you want into playlists. After the song is over, it will "stop" playing. You'll have the freedom to advance to the next track, start from the beginning of the song, or pause the music anytime during the silence.

This has to be the dumbest thread ever.

You want something that will do something that is done by a completely different program on a completely different platform, and because it doesn't, it's a software flaw in iOS4.

My advice? Just take the whole of five seconds  when they request a song, make a friggin playlist and let us get on with the rest of our lives.

Geez, some people are annoying.

Dumbest thread ever? Really? I looked over my comments and not once did I ever say there was a "software flaw in iOS4". Not once. I only lamented that there wasn't a program available that would play individual songs. Windows Explorer + Winamp was given as an example. Yes those two are on a different platform, but the CONCEPT is what I was trying to get across. Is that such a bad thing to give an example of what I am asking about? Obviously it is. As for "let us get on with the rest of our lives", you chose to browse these forums and read the posts. No one forced you, so don't cry a river that your time has been wasted. Finally, the only thing truly annoying is the sanctimonious attitude that some people have.

My thanks to everyone else that tried to help. Your time was appreciated.

And you are annoying for blasting people who ask questions. If you don't know or don't care just don't reply!

On The Go Playlist Doesn't Always Work

First of all, shame on all of you who are flaming this person for asking a legit question. This is a basic feature, an intuitive expectation, and frankly, it's another case of Apple deciding what you want and giving it to you without having consulted you.

They do a very good job of that most of the time, but when they whiff, it's very annoying.

I just wanted to point out that the "On-the-Go" playlist method DOES NOT WORK for everything. I listen to a lot of iTunesU lectures before bed, and for some reason you cannot create on-the-go playlists with iTunesU downloads.

Drives me crazy to want to listen to the next 1 hour lecture, only to wake up the next day with a dead battery and having to go back through 4 or 5 lectures that played while I slept to find where I left off.

There are many ways to allow for this functionality, and Apple has chosen not to enable any of them, because that is the way they roll, design-wise: facists make good designers, when they're smart facists with taste :).

Anyway, I just wanted to chime in here that the playlist method is not a cure-all. So lay off the person who asked the original question.

Try this...

I believe I might have a way...

If you don't really want to create an on-the-spot playlist you can do this:

I just tested it and worked but you will have to prep the songs first....

Different ways:
Way A:
1)Fire up Itunes
2)Look at your songs that you have specifically for the class (if its your whole collection it might take a little bit more prep time)
3)When you right click a song, select Get Info, then go to the info tab, in there there is a composer tab you can put the name of each song, then when you sync the playlist or songs and you open the ipod app, go to the "more..." tab then in there is the composer list and when you pick a song directly from there it will only play one song and the stop (If you use the search function it will not work properly since it searches all songs on the phone). Listo! If you click on edit in the more info screen then you can put the composer tab on the front screen of the app by replacing one of the four original ones... (If there are specific class songs then you can leave the rest blank in composer and you will not see them in that category and it will become kinda like a 'playlist'

Way B:
If there is just a couple of songs and not all of the albums you want to use, you could create a playlist with all of the songs and edit the songs info again and put the album name after the name of each song in the "name" part of the info and deleting the album name from the "album" line in the info tab. (You could also do it for the artist name + song in the 'song' line in the info tab for the song in itunes... You could also put just the song name in the composer if you know the name of all the songs.

For way A & B you could use the search function and it will work (I think) as long as you select the song from the correct list (if you edit the song line then in songs etc...)

The good thing of Way A is that you will not lose the categories divisions for artist, album and song but it's harder I would think to use the search function and pick the right list thus you would need to use the scrolling rolodex feature to search inside the composer category...

Try it with a couple of songs first just in case, prepping them like this will save you the on class time I guess... ;)

edited by vastoholic because it did not contribute anything at all, what so ever, to the OP's topic.

I know is silly but Drum Meister lets you select a song from you iPod library ( to pay the drums on it) once and stops. However to play it again you get to select it again.

I never said it was easier...

How is this any easier than making a single song playlist on the go? Seriously. How is the OP suppose to prep these songs if they don't even know in advance what the songs will be since the students choose them during class.

I never said it was easier or better... Seriously, If you actually read the OP's other msjs you would see that the OP wanted alternate ways other than creating a playlist right there on the spot and if it was possible at all... Also if you read at the beggining of my post: "if you REALLY don't want to use a playlist" meaning that these would just be other alternatives not necessarily better but they work. The prep work is done one time and at home so class interaction would be a couple of seconds faster. How would she know what songs you say? It's called genres; I don't think they will dance to heavy metal for example... Also if the OP wanted to use the IPod Touch maybe it's not on iOS4 so playlist on the go would not be posible...

Fraaaa's idea seems pretty good...

My apologies Carlanga. It was late and I was cranky. I had no reason to rant on your post like that. Instead of trying to contribute something useful to the thread I go off on another user who IS trying to help. I may need to take a few days off from reading macrumors. Again, sorry I posted that.

I just downloaded the free version 'Drum Meister Pro Lite' and tried it (it's a cool app!) but could not find a way to select a song from inside the app? Then, I played a song in the ipod app from a playlist opened the drum app and played but after the song ended it continued with my other song of the playlist...

My apologies Carlanga...

No prob, is in the past!:apple:

This is the app I use...

GoodReader for iPhone.

I use it on my 8G 2nd gen iPod Touch. This is by far my favorite app. It reads Word, txt, rtf and PDF documents. It can render text from most pdf's allowing you to change the font size for easier reading on the small screen. It also does annotation, highlighting, etc.

In addition it will play any media file that can play natively on the iTouch/iPhone. This includes audio and video.

You can create Folders and subfolders and drag and drop files directly into the app through iTunes [requires latest updates]. It is a simple matter of moving the files to the appropriate folder.

In the application "settings | audio playback" you can turn ON/OFF "autostart next song." This does exactly what the OP asked for. It will play one audio file/song and stop when it is finished and it doesn't matter how many songs are in the same folder.

You can find it in the app store by searching for "GoodReader for iPhone." It is currently priced at $1.99.

Hope this helps!

Brankee, thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for.

I already had Goodreader installed (to read When Worlds Collide and After Worlds Collide) but didn't know that the program could also play audio files.

You're a lifesaver :)

A little bit late... But I have the answer!

Hey there! I know this is like 3 years later (and hopefully the problem is sorted!) but have you tried OneTrack?

onetrackapp.com

It lets you have complete control over your playlists and is designed especially for stuff like dance classes and performances :)

Hope this helps.

Here it is 2014, I'm using iOS 7 and I (and others I know) still have the same problem as the original poster of this thread. In my case I instruct fitness classes and, during the class, without any previous preparation, need to be able to scroll my library, select a song and have it play once. I am usually not at the iPod to prevent it starting the next song or repeating the same one. Sounds simple and logical but as far as I can tell, can't be done.

To repeat the original request... On my iPod/iPhone, how do I play just ONE SONG, ONE TIME? I have read the entire thread and I didn't see one person state the obvious...NO it can't be done and it is very frustrating.

It should be an option on the iTunes Repeat selection feature: Repeat all songs/Repeat this song/PLAY THIS SONG ONCE/No repeat (i.e. Play continuously from the library/list.

All those well-intentioned suggestions about making playlists, using special apps, using Dropbox, and even editing the original file in some way came via responders who (as was pointed out more than once) "didn't get it" or simply "didn't read the question".

Perhaps, though, in the intervening years Apple has actually included this ability in another area of the software. So I'll ask the question again: in my iPhone/iPod, how can, on the spur of the moment, I play ONE SONG, ONE TIME? If someone is authoritatively able to just say "Can't be done.", I thank you in advance. Nrpro

Denon Audio player lets you do what you ask. It is a paid app. You scroll through the playlist and tap on one song, it asks you if you want to add it to the playlist, or replace the entire playlist. So it's two taps, but does exactly what you want it to do.

It also has a fantastic Graphic EQ that I wish to God Apple would implement across all apps/sound outputs.

I guess I could do that, but I was really hoping for an app that would play only one song.

I've read the entire thread and still can't fathom how taking a few seconds to create a single-song playlist isn't an ideal solution for you. It's, in fact, faster than your WinAmp workflow.
  1. Select Music app
  2. Select Playlists
  3. Select New Playlist
  4. Name it (I suggest the class or date for record-keeping purposes)
  5. (This will send you back to the playlists screen) Now scroll up to the search bar and search for your desired song
  6. When it appears, select the "+" icon to add that song to the playlist
  7. Then hit "Cancel," then "Done"
This literally takes all of 12-15 seconds.

The BEST solution:

(1) Plug your iPhone in.
(2) Yell: "Hey Siri, play [whatever]".
(3) When it finishes playing, yell: "Hey Siri, stop."
(4) Go to Step 2 for the next song request.

As you requested, there's no need to run to your phone to start/stop the music.
