A way to identify websites created by iWeb.

Most of the posted websites in this thread are not made with iWeb. They may have began in the past with iWeb and move to more versatile website creation programs.

For a website to be identifiable as iWeb it should have this meta tags in its code.

<meta name="Generator" content="iWeb 3.0.4" />
<meta name="iWeb-Build" content="local-build-20131202" />

This meta tags are inserted automatically by the iWeb application to every website it publishes or updates. However they can be removed manually but after an update by iWeb they will reappear.

The iWeb creation tool is rather obsolete today. It was from the begging strictly connected with the expensive Apple's mobilMe service. This service has stopped to operate for many years. Even if iWeb can work with conventional web-hosting, some basic functions are only possible with mobileMe. Also the iWeb is a search engine optimization nightmare. It is nearly impossible to comply with the google's webmaster guides. So google can't efficiently detect and process the content websites created with iWeb. The same is true with Bing and yahoo search engines. There is no search engine which can process the javascript photo webpages created by iWeb. The iWeb sites may seem simple at first glance but they are full of iFrames which are automatically inserted. Most iWeb's webpages includes three or more embedded sub-webpages. Which is something very confusing for search engines. A third party application (iWeb SEO Tool) can help a little to this fact, but is very slow and totally tiresome when website should be frequently updated.

On the other hand iWeb has many advantages. I believe that it is the best website creation tool for first time amateur webmasters. For someone without any knowledge of HTML of photo processing, iWeb is a miracle. Even if eventually someone learns html, iWeb with its html widget gives minor possibilities. iWeb take advantage of the Apple's software. The iWeb collaborates brilliantly with iPhoto, PhotoBooth, Facetime for photos and with iMovies, iTunes for videos and music. There is no need for knowledge about photo, video and audio processing. There is excellent drag and drop usage with Safari. It also adds some basic support for Google Maps and Youtube. Its blog support was excellent with Moblile me, but with regular web-hosting lacks interactivity. Despite that is a piece of cake and very fast and clever.

A nice website created by iWeb is http://www.athenswalk.net . It is rich in content with photos, maps and videos.

you make a lot of great points. for a one-page website i think its still fine. for anything else i will be looking at other options

My web site is indeed, made with iWeb. As Apple no longer services this app nor supplies the means to host a site, I had to post my site via a hosting company. I'm about to delete my site due to being unable to continue paying for the hosting service so it'll be off line for the foreseeable future. Once I can afford it again, I'll bring it back via MacMate as it works fine with iWeb.
