I need help, I have the old G5 Mac pro 1.8 tower. I got it when the G5's first game out. I wanted to upgrade to a new desktop. I want to know which one should I get, the new Mac mini or stay with the towers. Also which Mac mini should I get or tower. What is the speed difference in between my Mac pro 1.8 single processor and the new basic mac mini and basic mac pro tower. I use it for Photoshop, Itunes, Editing RAW photos and learning final cut pro. Thanks for any help....

A current 2,53 GHz mini will outperform your 1,8 GHz PPC single core three to four times. Unless you want to increase your performance by a factor of ten you probably do not need to look at a Mac Pro. If you are looking for something in between check out the iMac i7. It will roughly double the multi core power of the mini. All this is based on multi threaded apps like FCP.

Single threaded increases will be lower. But if that is your focus you should not look at the Mac Pro at all because it provides 4 or 8 cores which will be largely useless to you.

I love my mini. Way smaller, quieter and lower power consumption than any tower, let alone the mac pro. Get a mini.

a mini or imac i say... the mini will be cheaper, as you can use your mac pro peripherals but the imac is nice with it being one solid machine
