Leather flipflops are fine. I was reading an article the other day by a businessman in LA who met an old friend from London and was expecting to be teased for turning up to dinner in flipflops... only to find his friend in the same....

meeting an old friend for a casual dinner is not the same as trying to look nice to impress a girl!

if the idea is to look "dressy but casual" then NO flipflops!!! no atheletic shoes either.....those are fine for "causal" but they aren't classy enough for "dressy"

and it's most likely that jeans will be too casual also

polo shirt w/ kahkis might be ok but still it's leaning towards "casual".....especiaqlly since you say you wear them all the time

the dress shirt sticking out under the sweater is trendy with teenagers but it also really makes you look like a teenager.....which is fine if you are one I suppose

So then what should I wear instead of flip-flops?

EDIT A picture of something that would go with the whole outfit would be awesome. :)

Not all the time... Im not wearing one right now. lol.

As for the shirt, should I get an oxford with a soft collar or a regular button-down that has a stiff collar w/o buttons?

Any cologne/deodorant/general smell recommendations? I mean, I have my own deodorant and all, but anybody have any combinations that people just love? Sorry if it seems like I'm going overboard, but I just want everything to be perfect. :)

carefull with the cologne!!!!! too much cologne and EVERYBODY will be reminding you about it for a long time

what do you mean by "a regular button-down that has a stiff collar w/o buttons" ? By definition a "button-down" has buttons on the collar.

the shirt in the picture looks fine and it looks like it's a pointed collar so go with that!

as for shoes, casual loafers or casual tie shoes are fine as long as they dont look too much like atheletic shoes. You're doing sort of a Banana Republic look so check out their web site.

Any particular scents you think I should check out?

This is an oxford-style button down, with buttons for the collar:

This is a non-oxford-style button down, without buttons on the collar (it has stays in the collar to keep it stiff):

Which one? The all-white or the subtle brown (to go with the sweater&khakis&flip-flops) stripes?

I think I need to stress that this is a sort of dressy event. I mean, it's not a suit&tie event, but it most definitely isn't jeans either (I think).

Depending on where you are, dark blue jeans are dressy enough today that you may not look slack, although I'm not sure where you're going, so it's hard for me to say. Stay with khakis if you think it's a bit more upscale. I just think that some people look good in khakis, while others end up looking like an English teacher.

As for the grey/dark-blue idea, are you recommending that because you think it will look better than the brown, or just because it will look good?

Brown or dark blue? The only thing I referred to was the khakis or the blue jeans, so I'm assuming this is what you're talking about. I just think khakis make you look older, although it'll depend on how dressy you have to be. I like "smart casual," but for myself, this doesn't include khakis. If I need to "dress casual, but smart," then I'll wear dark blue jeans. If I need to be "dressy, but also casual" (there's a difference), I'll know this means I have to appear more formal and I'll just wear a pair of grey dress pants and a button down collared shirt, and I'd never look out of place.

EDIT Should the button-down shirt be a size smaller than the sweater (meaning a size smaller than it normally would be) ?

No. You're not going to wear this shirt exclusively under other shirts, are you? Get one that fits. Anything that fits will look good. Don't get a shirt with a stiff collar because if you wear only the shirt one day, it'll look weird if the collar is stiff because that's what really dressy, "I'm going to work" shirts appear.

I like your original idea, but perhaps with a slightly more interesting jumper. Still dressy, but a bit funkier. Something like this maybe...

Also, if you go with something like that, get the plainer shirt because you don't want stripes going both ways.

I like this idea the most. It's not as boring.

I like it, but I think I want to go with vertical stripes because they're more slimming (or so my mom says).

Yes it's true, but you're not a girl. ;) For men, it really depends on whether or not you're fat. Oh sorry, that's not PC. I mean't "heavy-set." If you're heavy, don't exaggerate it with horizontal stripes. Wear vertical stripes. If you're skinny or have a medium build, horizontal stripes will make you look bigger, which may be a good thing.

And isn't it going to be too hot for a sweater in San Diego this time of year?

Did you just wake up? That's likely the only time. :p

Wear shoes. The type of shoes depends on what you're going to wear, but I guess you can stick with black shoes. If you're wearing khakis, then you can even wear brown shoes. Your belt colour should match your shoe colour.

Personally, I think a pair of dress pants and a coloured stripe collared shirt could do the trick, but you don't necessarily need to listen to me, as I don't have a great deal of fashion sense. :p ;)

This is the J. Crew logo. They seem to use it intermittently. Some of there cloths I have it, some do not. This is off a polo.

I agree that polo's are too casual.

Calvin Klein's Crave. Girls absolutely love it. My friend Tiziana actually wears it sometimes she likes the way it smells so much.

Also, I like your original look. Light, perhaps pinstriped stiff-collar shirt, thin Oxford over top (make sure it's thin... I'm not sure what the weather is like in SF but you don't want to be sweating like a Christmas ham... you can always wear a blazer over top for the drive to the restaurant). Wear khakis. Slim, straight legs, if you want you can go for a slight bootcut. And as for shoes, wear medium to dark brown leather semi-casual shoes. Like the club shoes you can find at Lacoste. Even loafers would be fine.

My own personal favourite is Armani Black Code. It always seems to get compliments, just don't put too much on.

*more dressy, but MUCH more impressive...

Do you have some pictures?

So I'm guessing I should go with the whole "spray, delay, then walk away" sort of thing? :p

I was actually talking about shirt/sweater colors. :) BTW, it will be in San Francisco, where it's usually chilly at night due to the fog coming off the bay and the ocean.

Shoe-wise, can I get some pictures of what you guys are talking about? I can't get Lacoste stuff here, but anything else would be greatly appreciated, especially what kind of style of shoe. Thanks! :)

now stop stressing! :D

and remember......EASY on the cologne!!!! I don't wanna be smelling it all the way down here in los angeles

have fun

I did it!

I bought the clothes!

Here's what I ended up going with:

-Pants: dark khaki chinos
-Shirt: A&F white oxford (soft collar)
-Outer: green sweater, which actually was only 50 bucks from A&F  So much for 200.

I haven't gotten shoes yet, but I'm going to get those tomorrow, along with a matching belt (somebody here did say those should match, right?).

Any last shoe recommendations?

Looks like your not trying hard to impress people.

Which is sort of funny, since he seems so fracking™ concerned. :p

Congratulations on finally (!!) making a decision. I hope changing for the next morning isn't as difficult for you. ;)

Are you going to revamp your entire wardrobe now that you've found your look? Happy shopping. Your wallet will take a nice hit.

Decide on a cologne yet?
