Yeah I think theatres are dead too. I'm going to miss it because some movies are great experiences like Star Trek. I do really like the idea of new movies coming out on streaming though. I think I read somewhere that HBO will have 4K HDR as well.
They will have 4K HDR starting with "Wonder Woman 1984" on Christmas. I have a feeling HBO servers will crash on 12/25.

I realize this is a little bit off topic, however I find it very sad how little 4K content is available right now via streaming services and we are almost into 2021. I've had 4K TV's for years and now we are seeing 8K TV's getting cheaper all the time, yet the vast majority of content offered from streaming services is still 1080p. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.
Disney+ has a lot of 4K content. The most of any service I have used.

Yikes. Rats? Bugs?! I think you need to find better cinemas! At least around here (London), I'd say the cinema experience is massively better than it was even 5-10 years ago. Lots of cinemas - pretty much all of the big chain ones - upgraded with better seating, much bigger screens, better audio, better food & drink offerings, etc. The smaller independents that haven't upgraded usually offer cheap ticket prices and other enticements like good local craft beer ;)

Some, like IMAX etc, have truly enormous screens and amazing audio that most of us are never going to replicate at home.
And assigned seating that the theater sells but doesn't honor. I got in an argument with someone who was sitting in my assigned seat and made them move (in "Aquaman".) The theater gave me free tickets when I complained because they admitted they really can't enforce the policy they sell. Yes, confrontations. That's what I want to go to a movie for.

I don't have that problem at home.

Although I appreciate the movies being on a subscription service I already have, I sadly only own a 32" TV 1080p.

Our living room would have to be totally redone to put a bigger screen in. :(

Seems like its a superior product to Netflix. Just to get 4k HDR you need pay like 15 dollars on Netflix for there "supply" of "Quality" movies and tv shows. Disney + to me has been nothing short of amazing, 4k HDR movies.

Any word on if these will be released on iTunes the same day too? I am not a fan of streaming services. I watch maybe a couple movies a year. So $50 or so for that vs $15.99 or so a month for streaming services is way too expensive for what I watch. Plus, I would rather own the movie where I can watch it 5 years from now without keeping a monthly streaming service subscription going.

We literally spend about $40-50 every time we go to the theater. So it is cheaper for us to just stay home and pay for HBOMAX or Disney Plus. I don’t miss the the sticky floors, nasty bathrooms and overpriced food. Also, getting stuck watching a very bad movie..🤬..that is the worse.

I wonder how much Endgame would have made if it was released on this platform, and not in theatres. Studios aren’t going to make as much without theatres I just can’t see it happening.

I am in London too! Have you been to the Odeon in Covent Garden? Or the Odeon in Camden? Those are two of the worst cinemas ever! And don’t get me started on the state of Cineworld venues!!

My family feels our home "big screen" experience surpasses even IMAX.
I'm running a 75" 4K, big couch sitting 7feet away, head is about 8-9feet away from screen with dolby atmos running through an Onkyo. It is amazing! Popcorn tastes better, no loud people in front ( except the dogs sometimes ).
Large screens and blu-ray discs were the beginning of the end of movie-going for me. Things have only gotten bigger and better at home.

Not all movie theaters will go away - there will be fewer and focus more on a better cinematic experience. Even at 4K streaming there are digital artifacts which becomes apparent on large screens from 75" diagonal and above. It is the reason some people still buy Blu Ray DVD players.

Who in their right mind wants to sit in an overcrowded theater with other people chatting away, using their phones, smacking on popcorn and slurping a coke around them. And worst of all: that girl with the pineapple hairdo in front of them blocking their view.
And that's even before you need to consider those other people plaguebearers.

Seriously: let me watch it at home on a big OLED, with a decent surround sound setup. I've long before the pandemic sworn off movie theaters and they'll never get me back. I'll wait till I can get it online as I simply learned to hate the movie theater experience. Last movie I saw in a movie theater was the proverbial drop: we went to a matinee showing to avoid the worst of the crowds and yet there was the moron there who left his phone on, not holding back when it started to rudely ring to pick up the call and loudly announce to the other side he couldn't talk right now as he was in a movie theater... People lacking manners and respect for others ruined it, not those of us who opted out due to those lacking basic manners.

So yes: good riddance.

Millions upon millions of people have been enjoining going to the movies for years and years.

True... but there wasn't an alternative.

The only way to see first-run movies was to see them in theaters. Period.

Or you waited 9 months for them to come to RedBox and eventually streaming.

But if I had the choice back then between theater or home for the next big film... I'd pick home.

Now we're in a different world. Some theaters can't reopen. So if we have to watch new movies at home... I'm game. I'd even pay more than the average ticket price.

Certainly many would pick watching at home if that was an option. Many others would still likely pick a movie theater. The current situation is certainly something different entirely, and can certainly have effects down the line.

Haha, yes. I have been to both of those and they do have some “character”. But worst cinemas ever?! Nah, not that bad.

Other Odeons like Panton Street and Holloway Road used to fall in to this category too but have recently had great refurbishments. Hopefully they’ll get around to Camden and Covent Garden soon.

I don’t get to Cineworlds that often, but Cineworld also owns the Picturehouse chain which are all excellent. The old Trocadero Cineworld was totally renovated and converted into Picturehouse Central, which is brilliant and one of the best Central London cinemas.

This.

Also, smart phones are a problem even without phone calls: Whenever a moron is checking messages, their Instafeed, Snapc**t and other stuff (they feel the need to) check, everyone sitting (several rows) behind them are blinded by their screen.

I gave up movie theatres years ago.

I'm in the same boat. I feel bad for people that love going to theaters but I gave up on it years ago. Ads before trailers, too many trailers, stupid concession prices, incredibly rude people, stepping on people when you need to exit for a restroom break, etc just took the joy out of moviegoing for me. I'm excited by this announcement.

When I'm on vacation visiting family there is a place that has drawn me back to theaters. The rooms are small, limiting the number of people to be distractions, you reserve your seat, you get a reclining chair with tons of elbow space, and the food is good/reasonably priced. I can see places like that making a comeback if the virus gets under control.
That's many theaters in my neck of the woods.

I've only got one or two places like that to choose from. One of them continues serving food after the movie has started. So you can get a server standing in front of you while the patron argues that he ordered mustard on his hamburger.

Yes, this is the beginning of the end of the big budget blockbusters. Now we will see low-budget streaming content. Cheesy acting, etc.
For a preview of the future, just look at what the 8 to 14 year olds are consuming these days. In the US, it's no longer TV networks or cable channels. They're consuming videos on Youtube and TikTok. Sprinkled in with quality shows on Netflix and other streaming services.

Full length movies aren't consumed like they used to be back in the 80s and such. The movie theater was a gathering place for friends and a dark place for couples. Kids these days are just as comfortable chatting over discord and playing MMO games.

Passive viewing activities have been gobbled up by Youtube.

I hope this release model continues after the pandemic is over, even though it will bankrupt some movie theaters.
