Is there any way of downgrading back to 10.5.2? I only got .3 for Spore Creature Creator and I really want to play starcraft!

Works fine for me.

Same problem in 10.5.4 which came out today. As I have said before, Apple/Blizzard don't care. I doubt there will ever be a fix.

Blizzard cares, they said that Apple broke the compatibility, not them. I think they can come out with a workaround, but it's Apple who should update OSX to fix these broken apps because of this 256 color problem.

I was the one in this thread to say that 256 colours support was removed, so I know that. Blizzard also said they would fix OpenGL in Diablo II through Rosetta some years ago, and that hasn't come out yet. I know Apple broke StarCraft by removing that support, but it isn't to hard for Blizzard to run it in 256 colours in a 16/32 bits colours enviroment. I do this in Crossover (Wine), then StarCraft runs on my Mac through millions of colours, the game still is 256. But Wine has some small bugs, so I want the native version back up and running.

I stopped believing that's all. But I still hope...

Blizzard release patch 1.12 for Diablo II and it does fix the OpenGL problem. I was playing last night using it and didn't notice any problems.

Ok. Then I am sorry. I wasn't aware of that. Just weird that we haven't heard anything from Blizzard other than that they are working with Apple on it.

rbarris:
Thanks for that. It is good to see. With the announcement of Diablo III and SC2, there are a lot of peeps breaking out DII and SC to play through again etc...

I managed to drop back to the Leopard Graphics Upgrade 1.0 Geforce drivers, and am using those w/ 10.5.4 and playing DII with no problems.

As far as I've found no. nVidia don't tend to change their drivers too much (they usually just add support for newer hardware plus the occasional bug fix). The only thing that may be affected is that new OpenCL/CUDA thingy. I gather not many people would be bothered as it doesn't do much just yet as it's still heavily being developed and no programs that I know of take advantage of it. The Leopard graphic fix is the driver linked from the nVidia website that does support OpenCL/CUDA, I'm guessing the 10.5.3 set is just a tiny update to it (10.5.4 contains no video drivers).

As long as Apple is aware of the problem, I'm sure it will be addressed sooner or later. Using this in the mean time appears to have no side effects. However I did include a way to backup/restore the drivers just in case (they are also in the .pkg file for the 10.5.3 update if you want to use Pacifist).

Apparently the fix that the guy on top of me (sorry, forgot your name) fixes it perfectly but I checked out the source to do it (http://www.aptgetupdate.de/en/index.php/2008/07/01/diablo-2-unter-mac-os-x-1053-bzw-1054-loesung/) and it seems like it's written in another language (My first attempt was precisely because in the pants.) Oh I just copied it and pasted it and apparently it's just a translation.. Well, can someone check it out and interpret it so I can do it easily please? :D

The German guide that I based mine off does not cover backing up previous drivers. I have two Macbook Pros (latest revision) that I used for testing. One has 10.5.3 and the other has 10.5.4 and the 'fix' works flawlessly on both as far as I can tell.

The reason I posted my steps was exactly for the understandability reason, I can see that the google translation may be a little tricky to follow. If you would like any areas explained in more detail let me know. I can post scerenshots of the process if they will help.

Also, I didn't put this anywhere, but it is not necessary to backup the old drivers. I just have it there as a safeguard.

edit: I also only copy the files required for the nVidia cards to reduce conflicts with other software in the package.

StarCraft 1.15.2 and later should work on any chipset even if 256 color support has been removed. However, you may have to manually download and apply the patch if the game is crashing at launch.

Also, we are posting a beta of Diablo II on macgamefiles.com today which works on X3100 graphics and all Leopard versions. However it is beta and does not have battle.net capability, that will follow in an upcoming patch.

Just wondering... wouldn't it be great if Starcraft 1 made it onto the iPod Touch/iPhone! Sorry if it's been pondered before. :)
