Yes, there are ways of "fixing" it via jail breaking - but it's quite long winded (you have to patch commcenter, then edit the plists, then force load the plist again). Look for info on the CommCentre patch.

Depending on how much data you use, it might be easier to buy an iPhone 4/4S microsim from TMobile for £10, activate it in your iPhone 4 (this is important), and when you get a text saying your "12 months free web is active" swap it to the iPad. It gives you 500mb a month for 12 month, all for the cost of the initial £10 top up.

Is there a similar deal for T-Mo in the US?

AT&T,

i only used it to download a 60 MB file on my work computer. :/

60MB of unauthorized tether use, and you got an email.. Wow, was your total data use 3+GB for that month? Trying to figure what triggered the red flag.

People should read their contracts more often. See the following paragraph from the AT&T customer agreement.

"AT&T data plans are designed for use with only one of the following distinct device types: (1) Smartphones, (2) basic and Quick Messaging phones, (3) tablets, and (4) LaptopConnect cards, and (5) stand-alone Mobile Hotspot devices. A data plan designated for one type of device may not be used with another type of device. For example, a data plan designated for use with a basic phone or a Smartphone may not be used with a LaptopConnect card, tablet, or stand-alone Mobile Hotspot device, by tethering devices together, by SIM card transfer, or any other means. A data tethering plan, however, may be purchased for an additional fee to enable tethering on a compatible device. An Activation Fee may apply for each data line."

This just goes to show that AT&T has took a huge step in going beyond their service provider role, but they also dictate and manage how consumers utilize their service as they see fit. Content is already being affected as well.

AT&T > you.

The only way to achieve " AT&T < you " is to cancel your contract with them, without or with a legal right (remember if AT&T makes any changes, you are allowed to opt out of your contract without ETF penalties) to waive the ETF fees, and sign up with another carrier that better suits your needs.

This is one reason that I have VZW even though I don't get great signal at my home. I can swap my SIM card from my Android phone to my iPad3 without consequence. It's part of the Block C agreement that VZW had to agree to for their LTE.

Wouldn't AT&T be subject to the same agreement, since they also offer 4G LTE?

+1 It's against TOS only.

Also, the jailbroken app tetherme will enable undetectable native tethering.
I personally prefer mywi 4.0 but tetherme is super cheap.

But you are still going to get throttled beyond 3 gigs, regardless of how you use it.

Will iPad 3 verizon sim and trimmed to nano size work in iPhone 5 unlocked with verizon iPad plan? anyone tried? Does this also apply to unrestrictive use? Or will get email/sms to be prevented?

It doesn't matter what we all feel is fair. I'm all for being able to use the data any way I want... BUT it boils down to the signed agreement So, next time, instead of spending all this time and energy trying to seek out hacks and different ways get get around the system, maybe spend the time to actually READ the contract and service agreement you sign with AT&T, before you sign up for something you're not going to happy with down the line.

You're the only one here that makes any sense. I am sick and tired of whining twerps who feel like they are owed something for nothing. They don't like it? Then they need to go buy a ********* Transformer and spare us the tears.

Too many people take on this disgusting sense of entitlement, only because they didn't read the contract they signed, and then aren't happy with the terms.

The old saying rings true... "Quality, Speed or Price. Pick 2."

Well, if we're talking about AT&T I can't even pick ONE out of those 3. :D
