I don't use any of these apps, but it sounds like they have more in common with PC registry cleaners.

As a tech, I can tell you registry cleaners are at best unnecessary and at worst can cause OS issues when a registry entry is removed erroneously.

Due to this comparison and MacKeeper's dubious advertising practices, I have never bothered even as a PC convert.

I have used single use programs like monolingual in order to save space on small SSD drives, hence why I clicked this topic.

Cheers!

i've used monolingual for years, no issues ever. (same with onyx, for that matter)... i think the people who use these apps tend to NOT be 'basic' computer users...

I used to remove all of them and have gotten lazy about doing it after I had some issues with Office at one point. (Updaters stopped working if you removed any from the Office bundle.) Has that been taken care of now? I'd love to clear off some more space on my SSD since I use it for boot, etc. I like to keep it pared down.

They are not like registry cleaners, Mac OS does not have a register, all App have there own preference file unlike windows.

Monolingual

Almost 2GB removed. Nice!

I am a poweruser, I do know the system well, you could look into my history and see I helped out quite a few people, so I guess I know what I do, I also always keep a backup so if I mess up I can easily correct the problem.
Another thing I could do is to run the installer again to get rid of the problem.
I said above I use Easyfind to find the folders named .lproj, the App you use only removes languages from the Application folder, not from the System itself for instance, I guess something got damaged there although I find that fairly hard to believe, reason, when I copy over a damaged App, like Terminal for instance it starts to work again.
Later on I will run Mavericks installer again and then try to remove the languages again, first only on the Application folder and if it still all works on the System folders.

I appreciate the warning, but honestly, why? The cost of a GB nowadays is about 4 cents ($160 for a 4TB drive) Honestly, whether it's hours, days, or just a few minutes, I value my time way more than messing up the system, having to fix it, just to save about 4 cents of space.

Your Mac does not need "cleaning". It requires almost nothing in the way of "routine maintenance" that you need to perform regularly.
Apps like this do all sorts of things, from purging memory, emptying caches, to deleting files that may or may not have been left by deleted apps.

In short: they are unnecessary at best, and destructive at worst.
Wit the size of hard drives these days, even if there are some unneeded files on your disk, they will do no harm and take up little space.

See the comment from benwiggy below your post, people have had massive problems with these kind of Apps, they are not needed, many times you'll see people coming from windows which think it is a good idea to use such Apps on a regular basis, OS X does not need to be cleaned, only if you get into problems you could use an App called OnyX, this one is the one to use, but again, only when there are problems and it is rare on OS X to get into problems, OS X also has it's own maintenance scripts which run on a daily/weekly and monthly basis, this is enough.
Don't use CleanMyMac, MacKeeper and CCleaner, they are potentially destructive for your System, if you don't believe me search for it on Mroogle, there are plenty of people which ran into problems using these Apps.

It is crap, as is MacKeeper and CCleaner, use Onyx if you run into problems, that one is much more reliable.

It's funny that you agree that Macs don't need cleaning, yet you're in there tinkering around, manually cleaning stuff up. Pot, meet kettle. At least with Clean My Mac, it can be cleared up with almost zero effort; just gotta make sure to keep the language files.

Congrats! You saved about 6 cents.

It's not about the cost of the space. It's about the availability of space, regardless of the cost. A MBA user with a 64GB SSD has to conserve space as much as possible. It's not like they can drop some quarters in a slot and buy more space on the SSD.

The point is that some "cleaning" operations should not be automated by a 3rd party app. Many things should only be removed if the user knows what they're doing. Apps like CMM make it easy for a novice user to remove things that shouldn't be removed. Such apps are potentially dangerous and should be avoided.

Base.lproj

That said, with Mavericks I find that there is a new lproj called Base.lproj that NEEDS to be left alone else the system messes up ...

So I am guessing with Base.lproj and whatever language one decides to keep still intact, every other non-needed language files can be deleted (to save some space) ...

Good thing is the Base.lproj files don't seem to occupy that much disk space themselves ... :)

I concur. When I have cleaned out misc unused languages using Monolingual, it caused me no troubles.

But I had cleaned using Drive Genius 3, it apparently reads Base.lproj as not English (or whatever desired languages you wish to keep), and deletes all .lproj files that do not have the chosen names. It DOES NOT allow you to select "Base" as a keeper either. (Yes, I wrote to the developers about it).

Reinstalling just the Base.lproj files fixes all the broken applications.

when mavericks released, I installed it and deleted all non-english languages with monologual. No problems till now.

I have been using cleanmymac on my imac for 4 years and never had an issue with using this app,it does what it says on the tin"

when you have a 256G SSD, it's great to be able to create space. along with monolingual, i removed voices, unused garageband files, screensavers, dictionaries...another 4G of stuff.

not suggesting everyone do that. but space is a great thing... :)

Remove languages

I found that if you must remove, not necessary, so others say, make sure you leave all English ones in place...UK, Amrican, Australan, New Zealand....all of them.

Can you clarify: is that with Mavericks?

I need to make a list of who cleans out the needed Base.lproj files and breaks the dishes.
