Solution to Incase problem?

I too have the Incase rubber case. And after reading this thread, I also noticed the beginnings of some scratches to the chrome. :(

Not wanting to go naked, and not seeing any other cases that I thought would do the job, I came up with this temporary solution:

Put a piece of scotch tape over the bottom part of the chrome bezel, then put the phone back in the rubber Incase.

I'm hoping this will do the trick for the time being, until newer cases come out that have tighter manufacturing tolerances.

Damn man... Yeah something is not right here. Incase is probably not aware of this yet either. They are going to have a ton of pissed off iPhone customers.

I'm going to write them an email, then I'll talk to the people at the Apple Store tomorrow since I gotta go in there to pick up my monitor anyway.
Did you email incase? What did the apple store say? Apple should be ashamed at the quality of the bezel. It can't stand up to simply being in a pocket.

I can't believe how fragile the chrome is. My chrome scratched and i have been babying the phone. Oh well i wish Apple used better material or a plastic instrad of the chrome.

I may try scotch tape to protect what is left of the chrome and then use the incase cover.

yeah mine got a bit scratched up from the Belkin case, but I like the protection in certain situations, so I put scotch tape on the chrome. hopefully it doesn't pull off the chrome finish when I pull it off :)

I am considering returning my phone. It cannot stand up to normal day to day use and these scratches are killing me i also tried the scotch tape to stop any nrw ones from occuring.

I have this incase case and I'm starting to get a little worried. Should I be? I peeked under the rubber and the chrome still looks fresh. I've been using it pocketed since the minute it came out but I bought the case yesterday.

I emailed Incase last night around midnight, still no response from them yet today.

I'm heading in to the Apple Store today after work, touching back here with any news.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Anyone having issues with their case becoming loose and/or scratching your phone please report about it in this thread, I sent Incase the URL to this thread. Thanks guys, hopefully some good comes of this.

That shouldn't take more than a day or two.

I've been using mine since day 1 with no case....no major scratches on my chrome. I'm betting that after a while, it will probably build up tiny ones until it looks as bad as your picture. It definitley happend with my iPod and I treat that pretty well. I didn't want a case because I didn't like the idea of how it would feel with a rubber case or a thick plastic case around it. Only thing is I just gotta make sure I don't drop it...

Honestly though, who really cares as long as the screen looks fine. It doesn't hurt the functionality of the device.

agreed that the screen is the most important but for this amount of money the quality should be better. I bet most of us this forum are taking care of this phone yet tons of nicks and scratches. Not acceptable from apple or incase.

It hurts my feelings!

Buying a case to protect your phone should not result in worse damage than just being in a pocket without a case. Plus, this is a $600 phone we are talking about here, not some cheap free phone. The case wasn't all that inexpensive either. Judging by the cost, it should be a rather high quality cell phone case... Definitely at least one that actually protects your phone instead of harming it!

EDIT: wow... I am not alone!

It's the same as the ipod....I dropped $500 for a 20GB iPod and the back got scratched all to hell. I certainly wasn't pleased, but in all honesty, I didn't care that much because it was working fine. What really ticked me off was that the battery was toast in a year and a half...down to 5 min lifespan.

It was the same with the 80GB I got last fall. The back looks terrible already and I keep it in an Oakley Sunglasses bag that is designed for cleaning glasses lenses. I'm not happy that the back looks bad, but the screen looks great and it still works like the day I got it.

Now it's the same with the iPhone. Of course it sucks that the chrome is scratching, but what did you expect. Something that reflective is going to display every little nick. As long as it works well, I'm not going to complain.

I would be unhappy with Incase because it sounds like their product did the exact opposite of what it was supposed to, but I wouldn't be upset with Apple because it's not like we didn't know what we were getting into. They've been using the same material for years.

mine is stretching as well, but no scratches yet, I think im going to return it and wait for the iSkin Revo to come out.

That is exactly why I'm upset, and I'm not upset with Apple whatsoever.. The whole reason that my phone is scratched right now is because of Incase. I take extremely good care of my products, and I've never owned something to get so scratched up within even the first month- and this is definitely the first time that taking a preventative measure ended up with nothing but damage.

InCase

I'm not so sure this is a problem with the InCase sleeve. Chrome is pretty susceptible to blemishes from anything: fingernails, touching it wrong, etc. It really doesn't take much to scratch it up. I've used an iPod sock till I get my InCase sleeve and i'm starting to get some scratches on the side. Yeah, it ticks me off, but I think we're all in better shape than one person in another thread who jacked his up by dropping it on it's corner (could've been prevented by the InCase sleeve).

I think no matter what case you use, dirt will get in and scuff something up. The only thing we can do is keep our pockets clean and quit rolling around in the sand.

I think Apple shares some of the blame here. Mine scratched without the case. I bought the case and it scratched even more. The case did not help one bit but still I am anal about taking care of stuff and thus damage is disappointing less than a week in with minimal usage.

I also sent an e-mail w/ URL last night. PLEASE keep updates on what apple/inCase says. I hope inCase is panicing. The only way they can make this right in my mind is sending me the neoprene case for working out and a leather one for free.

Just Spoke With Incase

They basically told me that unless the CASE itself caused the scratching it isn't an issue. Typical. Here is their number:

Doesn't look like anything can be done. So everyone:

Before you shower, remember, WASTE YOU iPHONE CASE EVERYDAY

Are you talking about the Incase Protective Cover for iPhone? If so on the fake iPhone it says to clean out the case to prevent dust and other particles from building up. If not then those particles may cause slight abrasion to your device.

Chances are it you are talking about the same case, then they could reasonably tell you that you didn't follow the directions.

I know what you are saying, and I did read the instructions prior to installing the case. I cleaned that sucker every 2 days for the past week- and I think thats also a big reason why it got so loose and worn out...

That is a possible argument from them, but hopefully they wouldn't just start calling me a liar. If there are so many other people having the same issue, it is no doubt their fault for either making a defective case or not making the directions clear enough on the packaging.

No arguments from me, I have the same case and actually dug the box out to look. I am super paranoid about scratches and such. My wife has the clear protective shell cause she is prone to dropping phones (paid 650[times 2] for our Treo 650's and she was the first one to drop hers).

Pretty weak response from incase. I decided to return my phone and pay the restocking fee. The phone is just not ready for everyday use (meaning even with a case I cannot keep it scratch/nick free). I have owned 20-25 cell phones and most are nearly perfect when I move on to the next one (average usage is between 6 months to 1 year).

I bought film protection, a case, etc and used the phone for less than 1 week and it looks like it has been abused. I love the design, the style, the o/s, but I cannot spend $500 plus and not be able to protect it.

Back to the Apple store for me and back to my trustly old Sprint phone. Bittersweet for sure, but so is life.

ahhh dude cmon.. i use the incase case and have no problems, u guys are too worried my god. Screen is imposible to scratch , this case protects the back and the chrome border, i think is the way u guys use, so buy those blocks from sprint you can dive with them. Some people says cant see the screen dirty, so return the iphone , the screen works well even dirty and you cant scratch so i cant see a problem, now you gonna return because the iphone is not for everyday use ? its for what , a phone that have ipod , internet , camera , email ? if u use the case you will not see the chrome , or you need to look everyday to iphone and tell how beautiful he is.. in the end its just a PHONE ! nobody will stay with these for 3 years , in 3 years will have 2 or 3 new models. if people think like that you cant have a nice car, a nice notebook , everything is vulnerable to scratch, and the most important thing is that the iphone screen you cant scratch.. and people still complaining.. return the iphone its not for you really.

BTW this case is the best one so far out there.. the iphone looks sick on the black case.. all black and u see just the screen .. must buy in my opinion , just hope they launch more colors and models.

I realize scratches are going to happen, but I barely used this phone. If it looks this nicked up after 4 days of use (maybe 5 total calls) in a case, then I would hate to see the phone once I actually start using it.

Like I said I am returning the phone. For $500 it is just not worth it for me.

Well you should have gotten the 8gb anyway! :p

There is no way in hell I would return this phone. You are a crazy man as far as I'm concerned :)
