i've very upset at the moment. i was given an iPhone at work to use and was busy erasing all the previous data and then started reseting it to the default state using the option in the settings menu. however, that was about 40mins ago and the iPhone has locked down on me and i can't get it to unlock or for the display to show itself again! pressing the Home button or any of the other buttons, power, etc. won't do anything...

i know it's still on because when i switch from silent to normal mode or vice versa, it still vibrates.
the only way i've been able to get the screen on again is to remove the SIM card and then it prompts me that the card is missing. it then goes blank again.

i'm afraid i may have got myself in a non-fixable bug...

my only option now is to wait for the battery to die, as i can't open it up to remove it physically...

any help from anyone who has had this problem or knows a way to fix it would be highly appreciated!

    thanks in advance,
    Long.

If you haven't already, try holding down the home button and the top "power" button for about 10 seconds at the same time.

What are you warning people about though? The fact that your particular iPhone is having problems?

warning them that this might happen if they are unlucky enough.

it's a fairly straight forward procedure:

    http://www.zolved.com/synapse/view_content/30760/Resetting__iPhone_Settings

and i had assumed that it would be. but somehow it hasn't worked out for me.

so unless someone *really* needs to reset their iPhone, then go ahead, otherwise, beware of the possible side effects.

thanks for the 10 second tip. where did u get this? it's certainly not in the manual (hang on, what manual!??!)

Well... warning! I've reset mine a few times and had no problems. No idea where I got the 10 second thing from though... probably from the RFD. Did that fix your issue?

the 10 sec combo seems to work in that it go the iPhone working again.

but i'm still not convinced that because it crashed out while trying to reset itself means that it completed the task or not. at one point i did wonder to myself if it was re-formatting it's 8GB of drive as it was taking so long...

but i'm too scared to do it again... it's working now, so i'll leave it at that.

    thanks for the top tip.
    Long.
