Hello all.
I friend of mine has had an iPad 4 on a shelf for a year more or less. Never opened, thus never activated. (Yes........ I know right?) \FACEPALM

Well, the thing is he wants to sell it now. I tried to check the warranty status at Apple, but it seems it needs to be activated first.

When does warranty start? Purchase date or activation date?

Thanks.

Apple's warranty page states this:

Looks like he's out of warranty.

I'd be quite sure that the battery will be damaged, and even before the year runs out, or if you have statutory rights, that will be damage caused by the user and not covered.

And imagine that iPad is found twenty years from now, still wrapped. It's not going to work, and Apple won't have any idea how to fix it.

Hadn't though about the battery!! Will tell him to go to an Apple Store ASAP.

Thanks!

How would that effect the battery if the box has never been opened? I don't understand that.

Yea my friend the warranty isn't any good no more as maflynn stated in the post but it should still work like brand new.

The battery should be just fine and there would be no damage, just out of warranty.

Well, gnasher had a point, as batteries that are stored for too long without any use will probably get damaged. There are plenty of articles out there which tell you how to store batteries, and leaving a battery on its own for over a year is no ideal.

It won't probably be dead, but after a full charge it might have lost a lot of its original full capacity.

It is not like it has been in the box for years.

If they charge it, it will be just fine.

20 years from now still in its sealed wrapper might be worth a few quid!
