Regretfully no initial reviews are going to tell you straight away how well the colour holds up to wear and tear. We would need a time machine for that to browse here in a year.

i'm less worried about the area around the ports, and more curious about fingerprints. either way, we'll have reports in a few weeks...

Is there anyone out there with $1,200 to burn to slice, dice, and beat the living **** out of the midnight model to see how well it holds up?
Some YouTuber should buy one and film themselves repeatedly connecting and disconnecting cables…

They could change into different, weird costumes every few minutes — with different pets — otherwise, it'd be like watching paint dry or an unoccupied carousel go round. Every half hour, they could zoom in and show whether flecks are coming off.

From all the hits, or a Go Fund Me page, they could pay for the thing!

P.S. I expect my 10% commission for suggesting the idea!

I want to see someone rigorously scratch the lid or bottom with a set of keys like they're having a massive seizure.

dude, you've got the idea. you should go for it yourself (and take 100% of the $)... 👍

I’d get midnight to match my 13 max leather case, they should of done iMac in midnight

I'm going to assume this will age like Space Grey does - you might end up with a few small marks round the ports and if you do nice/scratch the body it will be more visible that on a silver machine. I guess it depends if you want to keep your machine absolutely pristine or not.

i have a space grey 12" macbook (for six years!) and it looks absolutely fine. i'd say it has more to do with how we treat our devices than anything else...

I do think the darker colours are less forgiving, but I don't have an issue with that.

This video shows the issue that I personally experienced with space gray.

(It'll start at the relevant part)

Time will tell if the same fate befalls midnight. I'm thinking Apple's got this one figured out but oddly it'll probably still afflict space gray models.

Someone might have made this connection before, but who else had a "black and slate" iPhone 5? The dark blue anodized color quickly picked up silver chips and it was all over the forums. The next year Apple replaced it with the first Space Grey iteration.

Though, I hope this comparison is irrelevant and anodizing technology has advanced a bit in the last 10 years.
I still have my slate iPhone 5 and it's barely showing signs of aging. But these new MacBook Airs.. I mean, look at them. No ordinary customer could get their hands on them but they're looking used already. That's unacceptable. The build quality is crap.

i do not have that problem here. on my macbook, one letter on the keyboard is smeared a bit (& my camera died last year), but otherwise it looks fine (i use it ALL the time, but i do take good care of it).

i'd still argue that a lot depends on the care we take of our devices...

impressive that you've determined this before the airs have been released...

We meet again pal.. But look.. the new Airs are not even selling yet, but the're already showing signs of age. Why are you such a devoted follower of the Apple religion if you can clearly see how bad is the build quality of Apple devices right before they're ready to sell? I mean this is the objective fact that their fit and finish sucks. Go ahead and buy the new Air in the new must have colour and wait to be disappointed.

yes, i will wait until they're released before i pass judgement. crazy, right? o_O

Waht more do you want man? The fit and finish sucks. Get the silver version.
what are you basing your comment on? the hundreds of people at WWDC who handled the new air? here, my mac is only used by one person (me)... and i take good care of my stuff.

but am sure you're right (as always), and sad that apple never bothered to check their work...

I also experienced the same problem with my previous MacBook Pro (Space Grey):

And it already appeared just after a few months. This is why I bought my new MacBook with the traditional "Silver" frame and it is much better this way!

Are you talking about fingerprints? That’s not really a sign of age, just an unfortunate aspect of some finishes (including some glossy iPhone finishes over the years). It just depends on how you plan to handle it. The Slate iPhone 5 finish was a problem for a lot of people, especially coming from the robust steel/glass of the iPhone 4. The Midnight MBA will, for better or worse, get compared to the silver and space grey MacBooks people have used before. The cost of the dark finish might be visible fingerprints and scratches. People can accept that, or buy silver again.

Midnight will be less likely to get stolen because thieves dont want to leave their fingerprints. This is why Apple has traditionally had silver products, they have higher rates of theft therefore apple makes more money to sell you a replacement. They finally introduced the theft resistant finish because most criminals have already stolen a MacBook by now so that market is saturated
