Was going to buy an iphone today--any reason to wait a few days?

My 5-year-old Sprint samsung phone is finally dying. And I'm dying to get an iphone.

But I could hold out for a little while, if there's a good reason to. Will iphones issued in the next week have adjustments, software, hardware that the ones currently in circulation do not?

Thanks for any tips. I'm not a pro at this stuff.

Nope. I seriously doubt Apple would update the hardware after only a month of sales with the current hardware... and any software that may come out would be available to current iPhone users via a software update. I say go get one ASAP!

Apple doesn't change products after only a month. So far only minor updates have come. Software upgrades don't matter since that can be done at any time, but I'm pretty sure the iPhone won't be seeing any hardware updates for quite awhile yet.

The only reason I could think of was if you were into S&M and wanted to torture yourself. Barring that desire, no reason at all to wait if your reason for waiting was based on the hope of an imminent release of a new iPhone model. If however you are wondering because you might use the money somewhere else, like ohh I don't know lets just go with an iMac, then yes you might want to wait a week.

iphones sold in a couple weeks might have the 1.0.1 software update pre-installed, where you would have to install it yourself if you buy one now. but it's not a reason to delay a purchase. like the poster above said, no hardware updates will come for some time. if you're going to buy one, buy one now.

Backup.
Update to 10.4.10 (iphone needs it.)
Update to latest iTunes (iphone needs it too.)

Thanks. All good news. I'm going to the store in a few hours.

Accessories?

I hear the thing is slippery, so I might get a case. I'm not into wearing a big piece on my ear, so no Bluetooth.

Anything you're really glad you bought with the phone?

Thanks again. This is a good forum.

Screen protector. Not so much to avoid scratches (although it helps) but mainly to keep finger prints off the screen. Maybe it doesn't bother you but it drives me nuts and without it I'd constantly be wiping the screen off. I ordered the BSE (before I even got my iPhone) but the store sells the Power Support protectors that people seem to be quite fond of.

I also got the car charger although I haven't used it that much. I usually just dock my iPhone while I'm at work and that fills the battery which is more than enough to last me till the next day.

I didn't bother with a case yet. I leave it in a pocket that has nothing in it, so I don't scratch it up.

Agree with the above comment. For those who are still thinking about it, you can get ready by doing a few things.

Update to the latest iTunes.
Install Safari on your PC and import all bookmarks from IE or Firefox.
Get your contacts into Outlook. I used ActiveSync from my PDA, and brought a few in with a tab delimited file. Outlook will let you import from a file, you just have to pick the order of the fields.

If you do these steps, your iPhone will be ready to go right from the start.

Go back to At&t or Apple and get the Belkin Slim case, you won't regret it. Great fit, awesome belt clip, great access to buttons... Its a gem of a case.

cases are very personal -- all depends on where you stand in the tradeoff of protection vs. aesthetics.

At the very least, I would get something like the power support crystal film set. You don't even know it's there and the comfort level you get from knowing it is there is worth every penny.

Good choice in getting the phone! i know im probably too late becuase im a few hours behind you. But like some others had mentioned get a screen protector, especially if your not going to get a case. The power support screen protector has worked flawlessly for me. I wish i wasnt so paranoied about getting scratches on my phone because damn it feels really good with my belkin accrylic case on. But o well i rather have it safely tucked away in its case. And i know someones going to say its not safe in that case because it scratches the phone on its own. But trust me the phone would be a lot worse off without the case on.

get a second phone to make calls with

since you will no longer be able to carry on a normal conversation without being dropped. On the bright side, you will have the best iPod ever made!

i don't know what you're talking about. the iphone isn't any less capable of making phone calls than any phone i've owned previously. and if your remark is an attack on at&t, some people experience better service with at&t. i know i do, compared with my old sprint phones.

Do some research on cases AFTER you buy your iPhone, and as stated, it all depends on your personal preference. Out of the box, there is a protective plastic covering on the screen, many of us left it on until we could buy a different screen protector (though I'm still on the factory installed cover, and its fine). Not many other extras are really on the market yet. Congrats, and welcome.

i second that! i am getting way better sevice with at&t than i was with sprint. And everyone i talk to say that they can hear me really good.
