I'd say some Irish might get offended by it, but it's not normally used these days as an insult or offensive word. It's certainly in use.
For example in Sydney there is Paddy's Market which appears to be an accepted and acceptable name which, according to the page I linked, comes from an Irish area of Liverpool.
So the question - do you know the word "Paddy" to be racist?
It's more than a little condescending. Not every Irishman is called Patrick.
I would never class calling somebody from Ireland 'Paddy' as racist.
Paddy, slang (usually derogatory) term in British English for an Irish person
1. Slang: Often Disparaging. an Irishman or a person of Irish descent.
1. (ethnic slur) offensive term for a person of Irish descent
That's more or less my take on it. I don't think you can be "accidentally racist", but your choice of words may have been unintentionally offensive. I wasn't familiar with the term, but based on the responses so far it sounds like it is offensive to some.Is it possible to be accidently racist?
I can honestly say I've never even heard of the word.
As for Paddy Wagon, its what you used to haul unruly Paddys off to the station in.
Everyone else that tries to claims to be Irish is referred to as a 'Paperback Paddy' by my Irish mates!
The fact that the Irish use it themselves says enough to me!
