Coming from an iPad one (which I passed to a family member a year ago) and Motorola Xoom (which this new iPad replaced) I can say it's definitely worth it. It's fast and has the best screen I've ever seen on a handheld device.

While it's more restrictive than the Xoom, the number and quality of apps is something I've missed since giving up the original iPad.

Also, if you're a Mac user the bookmark synchronization is a great plus without having google spy on your every move.

The 64GB LTE version is a bit pricey but worth it in the long run.

Cheers,

One can say the moon is square, but that doesn't make it square now does it?

I don't need to justify anything, but by the same token one could say many are trying to justify not upgrading, but saying this version is marginal at best. Anyone looking at the display and having spent some time with it and noticing how much smoother and faster it is knows they made the right decision.

You sort of nullified your own argument by pointing out that people can pretty much say anything, eh? In the end, what's a powerful and paradigm-altering improvement to you might just be a marginal improvement to others. I have seen plenty of evidence that indicates that the only real improvements are LTE and a higher resolution screen that wows some and is "meh" to others, and that the supposed speed and smoothness improvements you're noticing aren't really showing themselves in general. That some people are deriding others for not upgrading and not being as impressed by these changes is silly, which is really all I was trying to point out in the first place.

Just because someone else didn't get the new iPad because for them it wasn't a big improvement over the 2 doesn't mean that theyre just trying to justify their decision to themselves.

All depends on how much you value screen quality. The screen is the upgrade here, yeah there's LTE if you get the 4G model (I have an LTE phone so I'm tethering that instead of paying another $130 for LTE), and the camera but a camera isn't really as important on a tablet. To some people the screen really isn't that important and the iPad 2's screen is still a solid screen. But the new iPad is definitely far better, like to the point where's it's one of the best screens on any device. It looks like the iMac's screen to me in terms of color and contrast but far sharper (obviously because it's much more pixel dense). Comparing it to the 3GS to 4 change is interesting, thing is the original iPhone 3G/3GS screen was total crap really with terrible contrast, colors, and viewing angles so the iPhone retina display was a ridiculous jump from that in all areas. The old iPad screen on the other hand is still a very good IPS display with great contrast but the colors are not as good as the new screen.

yeah, it 'seems' like web pages are much better.

Things are small, but if you have good vision, or wear reading glasses (which just gives you adjustable, perfect vision really...obviously), then it looks much better.

Only time will tell though.

major upgrade for me, I upgraded from an Ipad 1 to an Ipad 3. The speed alone is great, but added the new screen and LTE it is amazing. I used to get skipping when playing Slingplayer etc. today i watched sling for one hour with no problems and the picture is 1000 times better. On at&t LTE all the way in San Diego on the 5 freeway. Can't wait until the Iphone can get LTE speeds. I have unlimited data on both Ipad and Iphone so no worries.

As an iPad 1 upgrader, yes! LTE and retina display has blown me away.

No issues with heat, battery life or anything else!

1. My number one complaint is the size of the battery that is used to feed the gpu that powers the display. You want your portable devices to charge quickly.
2. Would like to have seen a newer more power efficient quad core cpu and gpu made from the ground up to handle the retina display and make everything even faster. I feel that Apple took 1 step forward but 2 steps back. It's like adding a larger engine while increasing the gas tank because the mpg's went down hill and you want the driving range to be the same. That's the lazy route.
3. You can't easily tell the ipad 2 apart from the 3rd gen. Apple could have done something different. They could have given it the same squared off industrial design as the iphone 4/4S. Instead it looks more ipod touch.
4. Time to drop 16gig. Period.

I'm really nit picking. Nothing is perfect but the ipad is still the best tablet experience.

Totally worth it for me. I love the display. I use my iPad for many things, including work (in which I do a LOT of writing). So the super-crisp text for reading and writing is awesome. Photos look fantastic too. Love it! Upgraded from iPad 2 with zero regrets.

I have limited experience using ipad2, so this is actually my first ipad. All I can is WOW!, Steve really was a genius. Using this thing is a completely new experience compared to sitting in front of a desktop, or heck, even reclining in bed with a laptop (however slim and light) on your lap. The posture you can adopt really makes all the difference.

I am not really finding the battery charging thing an issue. It sees me through 2-3 days of usage on average, and I just plug it in to charge overnight. When I wake up in the morning, it is at 100%.

I am slowly playing around and seeing how far it can go towards taking over some of the stuff I do on my imac. Preparing documents using keynote in ipad for instance, will get some getting used to. I don't find it better or worse, just different. :)

I am facing some sim card issues though (sim suddenly stops working, needs to reboot ipad to resolve issue, but problem seems to recur every few days), will probably contact my telco over the weekend to see how it can be ironed out.

All in all, worth every cent I paid so far (the 64gb 4g version).
