I've ordered the new iPad Pro, Keyboard and Pencil - but what a shame the keyboard doesn't appear to have a backlight... You would think they could have added one in this version ...
Oh they totally could add it. They just don’t want to. I don’t even think it would suck up THAT much battery from the iPad. It’s probably just that there’s more parts, which would tempt them to add more cost. Would probably add thickness too

You are correct. I have both the original ASK and the Logitec Slim case with the backlit keyboard. I can't ANY difference in battery life. Both use the smart connector. I know I probably should learn to type better but I fly internationally a lot of work and really need a backlit keyboard during long night flights. I also ordered the new ASK but I'm hoping that Logitec comes out with a backlit version.

I know you're most likely joking but after buying the original ASK and the Logitec Slim Combo I have close to $350 in keyboards. If Apple would make one that had backlit keys it would probably save me money. lol
