I seem to remember, maybe incorrectly, that if I wanted to determine Safe Boot Mode or not I could start at "About This Mac" menu. Am I wrong? All I get now are System Settings. I don't remember using an app to get there. Is this new?

Sort of.

About This Mac > More Info now opens System Settings > General > About, so that's where you start (however you want to get to it).

Then, System Report > Software > Boot Mode

It doesn't show up there under 10.3, 10.14 or 12.7. However, it does show up on the "splash screen" in versions that had such a thing. An example of the screen is attached, although in this image it doesn't have the Safe Boot text.

Maybe I just imagined this, but I used to go to About This Mac. There was a link to System Information (what is now System Settings), as now I must run the Application System Information. Its no big deal, just wondered why I was going through ASI in past.
