For average use you won't see much of a need for anything over 4GB, at least nowadays. Even running a VM with that much (so long as you're not really running much else) works just fine with 4GB.

That being said, it's easy as heck to upgrade and RAM is dirt cheap so throw an extra 4 or 8GB of after-market RAM in after buying and you'll be solid for the next couple of years.

Yes, but they usually cut costs on other things.
Of course I'd like it to see 8gb as standard, but on the other hand I'm glad that they didn't cut costs on stuff that I can't upgrade that easily/cheaply.

4gb is good enough for most users at the moment. Much better than a few years ago when they sold machines that didn't have enough RAM even for everyday tasks under OSX.

That too. Pretty much all PCs over $1000 have 6/8GB+ of RAM.

More importantly though, Windows doesn't need ram nearly as much as OSX does. Macs have always been ram deficient, particularly with older versions of OSX that would just gobble it up like crazy.
