How did you get all of your old data and apps onto the new iPad?

My guess is you reloaded your apps from the app store purchased section while on cellular. If you aren't paying attention the app downloads can really add up, even when limited to 50MB a piece over cellular.

Or watched a HD movie. That would eat a large portion of your data plan, and leave a bit left for your browsing usage.

I turn my cellular data off when not using it because who know what's running in the background and trying to update.

NOt blaming at&t just wondering how I blew all my data

I'm not blaming AT&T but I'm saying there;s no way I used 3gb of data in 3 days. All I did is check my email download a couple of apps watch a few videos I had an Ipad 2 and never went over 1GB in a whole month doing way more. I will contact AT&T I was just wondering if anybody had this issue or just me.

Well there's your problem.

When I first got my Verizon iPhone it was about 5 days before the end of my billing cycle. I too got an email saying that I was in danger of going over my 2gb. I looked at my usage and was around 300mb. But I had downloaded a bunch of apps to get the phone going.

I knew I wasn't going to use that much in the next few days and didn't worry about it. To date I don't even use 1gb of data per month.

I know someone else who had this same issue on a family plan and they got so upset they returned the phone. I bet she did the same thing, but they never looked at what they actually used.

You really need to see what you actually used and when your billing cycle ends before you get all stressed about it.

I have the Verizon iPad, activated the LTE on Friday, used it some and then was on wifi the rest of the time. It somehow said I had burned through almost a GB of data. I really doubt I used that much data, I think it is counting wrong. I get the sneaking suspicion that it is counting wifi data if cellular data is on even though the bits are going though wifi. I have not been able to conform though.

It there a site at Verizon where you can check what THEY have for your data usage. This could be a bug!

A GB data is a lot of data to use with out knowing.

Just saying.

We're gonna see many more cases of this and people will be ticked off.

I'm just going to enjoy the unlimited unthrottled buffet.

If people need a lot of data it would be cheaper to buy someone else's plan while they're still cheap, like 600$.

:apple:

I am still wondering how I have used 2gb in the middle of my mouth for my 4S. Normally, I use up 1gb at the end but yet somehow I have 2gb in the middle.

'Somehow' we got charged for texting services we never signed up for.

Did you not realize that you would be charged for sending texts even without having a text messaging plan? I'm not sure what they cost per test now since we have the unlimited text messaging plan but they used to be ten cents a text message.

3GB seems like a lot but really it isn't.

Stream 2 baseball games on the MLB At Bat app, and you will go over 2GB. If it is a long game you can get close to 1.5GB for one game.

So for movies in HD you are looking at what maybe 4 a month.

And all of that assumes you are not also using your iPad for email and internet and anything else you might want to do.

These data plans really handicap a great device.

I got my New IPad on Friday I Was really excited with the 4G LTE speed. Right now I just got a message saying I'm almost out of data? I don't know how this could happen I don't feel like I use that much data and I was using WiFi most of the time. I never had a problem with my iPad 2 I had 2gb and never ran out. Anybody having this issue?.

There was a write up somewhere about Safari loading twice the data to first maintain compatibility with normal display on older ipads and the new iPad. Remember that in order to take advantage of the Retina display, your photos and videos don't seemingly look nice magically. They look nice because Safari will download the highest resolution needed to present to the screen at its best. The way it works is that, it will first load the normal resolution and THEN when available reload the same images at a higher resolution. This works in both still images and videos. The reason iPad 2 does not consume much bandwidth is because, high resolution retina images will not look any better on a normal screen. So Safari only loads the normal 72 PPI web standard images.

Same idea with watching 480p videos as opposed to 1080p HD videos. People are shocked initially that 1080p videos are much larger, therefore people streaming HD 1080p will easily go over the limit faster than 480p. But you need to stream HD in order to take advantage of that nice screen.

So I think it's not AT&T's fault, it's what you will have to expect to take advantage of the Retina screen. Do you ever wonder why Pages, Numbers and Keynote became bloated at about 2.5 to 3 times the file size of pre-Retina display? Those bigger files held the higher resolution artwork for Retina display.

3Gb is the bare minimum. When you are streaming HD content as opposed to SD, you need at least 6Gb or more. Retina display NEED larger files because it needs the higher resolution images or videos in order to show what Retina display is capable of. Retina display will make carriers very happy, because you are now forced to stream HD content at much larger sizes than what you are used to.

We've certainly have a data and storage delay. The iPad should have twice the space being two years and twice the bandwidth being LTE. Times move on, the cell companies and apple should have stepped up.

I use this data usage app on my iPad, but I have grandfathered unlimited data on my iphone. :)

I haven't used my LTE yet since my ipad is in the mail. :D

There are a number of apps that will keep track of your data used. I use "Data Usage". I have an AT&T iPad 3. I just checked and the Data Usage app has the identical MBs used as the iPad itself says. No cheating by AT&T here.

http://appshopper.com/utilities/data-usage 99 cents It will also track WiFi data.

Obviously. But it was b/s third party stuff like "joke of the day" crap. Haven't had that issue since dumping them 3 years ago.

Turn cellular data off when not using it. Turn it on who you need it.

Use wifi for everything else. Monitor your cellular usage.

If you leave LTE on all the time, your gonna eat thru data fast.

I think the problem with LTE and watching videos online is that some sites serve you better quality videos depending on the bandwidth so you may not realize who much data you are using.

When I started my 3GB LTE plan, it told me I was on my old 2GB plan until the end of the billing month and -then- it would switch over.

OP, how close were you to your data limit on your old plan?
