I had a Watch Series 7 for 4+ years. Loved it and worked great. One of the features I loved (that I don't ever remember having to set up) was that while I was doing my Outdoor Walk (I go 4 miles and the iPhone is at home so music is directly on the Watch), it would announce every time I walked a mile on the JBL Go3 Bluetooth speaker I was holding. Example: I would be walking and the Watch was pushing music to the BT speaker and when I came to mile 1,2,3, etc. the song would get real quiet and there would be an "mile 1, pace 14:49" announcement on the speaker and a second later the BT would turn the volume back up on the song. The Series 7 worked this way with my older iPhone 13 Pro as well as my current iPhone 16 Pro.

I lost the Series 7 a few days ago, got an 11, and when I do my Outdoor walks, it doesn't announce any kind of metrics ON THE SPEAKER while playing music on my BT speaker. Instead, it lowers the volume of the speaker and plays the announcement on the Watch and then turns the volume back up on the speaker.

I've looked pretty hard on the internet and cannot find anything to enable or disable on the Watch, the Watch App, or the new iOS 26.3.1 (a) (that I was forced to upgrade to from 18.x) to fix this problem.

Devices Details:

iPhone 16 Pro iOS 26.3.1 (a)
Watch Series 11 WatchOS 26.2
old Watch Series 7 WatchOs 11.3.1

Any advice on how to fix this? Again, the iPhone is not with me or anywhere near me when I go for my 4 mile walk.

Thanks so much in advance!

It sounds like your new Series 11 is treating the "Voice Feedback" as a local system alert rather than part of the media stream being sent to your JBL speaker. This is a common hiccup when transitioning to a new watch, as certain "haptic and audio" routing settings reset to default.

Since you've already verified the basics, the issue likely lies in a specific toggle within the Workouts settings or the way the Watch handles AirPlay/Bluetooth routing for system alerts.

Here are the steps to get those mile markers back onto your speaker:

1. Enable Workout Voice Feedback

Even if you don't remember setting it up before, it may be toggled "Off" by default on the new hardware.
  1. On your Apple Watch, open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Workout.
  3. Scroll to the very bottom and ensure Voice Feedback is toggled ON.

2. Check the "Control Nearby Devices" & Routing

Sometimes the Watch tries to be "polite" by keeping Siri and alerts on the wrist while sending music to the speaker. To force them together:
  1. Open the Settings app on the Watch.
  2. Go to Siri.
  3. Tap Siri Responses.
  4. Ensure Announce Notifications is on, but more importantly, look for any setting regarding "Prefer Speaker" if available.

3. The "Media Ducking" Reset

The behavior you described—where the music gets quiet (ducking) but the voice plays elsewhere—usually means the Watch thinks the speaker is "Media Only" and not a "Voice Destination."
  • Try this fix: While your JBL Go3 is connected and music is playing, swipe up to the Control Center on the Watch, tap the AirPlay icon (the circles/triangle), and re-select your JBL speaker. Sometimes re-establishing the handshake while the Workout app is active "reminds" the Watch to route all audio channels to that device.

4. Headphone Safety Settings

iOS and WatchOS sometimes restrict loud announcements over Bluetooth if the device isn't categorized correctly.
  1. On your iPhone, go to the Watch App.
  2. Go to My Watch > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety.
  3. Ensure there aren't restrictive "Reduce Loud Sounds" settings that might be suppressing the overlay of the Voice Feedback on top of your music.

A Note on Versions

You mentioned being on iOS 26 and WatchOS 26. While it seems you've jumped into the future (current versions in 2024 are iOS 18 / WatchOS 11), the logic for the Workout app has remained consistent. If you are on a "Beta" or a very new update, Apple occasionally moves the Voice Feedback toggle inside the specific workout type:
  • Open Workout App > Tap the three dots (...) on the Outdoor Walk tile > Tap the Edit (pencil) icon > Alerts > Ensure Split or Voice is active there.

Believe it or not, we cannot post AI generated content. Better to just edit it and take the credit for yourself phrase it into your own words.

Hi and thanks for the info! Unfortunately after reviewing the 4 items above, it did not help today.
#1 was already set
#2 I enabled this as instructed
#3 did not help
#4 was already set

I can only do this workout once a day. I will reboot my Watch tomorrow and see if that fixes it and reply back.

1)I tried rebooting the Watch and that did not help.

2)I updated iOS on the iPhone to 26.4 and that does not help.

It seems people here don't have an answer which is fine. Let's try a different approach:

If you have a Watch 11 and use the Outdoor Walk feature and it announces the Splits ("mile 1, pace 14:49" for example) over your portable bluetooth speaker, can you please provide specifics about your WatchOS version, iOS version, iPhone model, etc?

Thank you!

Oddly enough, I get notifications through my AirPods while listening to Spotify and usually it works like clockwork. But yesterday when the first alert came through it muted my AirPods and I didn't hear the alert. I assume it came through the watch but can't be sure. The second alert, and other alerts from there, were fine.

I'm on 26.3 on my Watch.

The one thing that I did differently yesterday was that I started the workout and then went and opened Spotify. Usually I start my music and then start my workout.

I'll try it again over my next few runs and see if it does it again.
