Wife has the watch and I'm ready to receive one as birthday gift in July. Problem is, be a shame to get it if 2.0 is out a month or two later.

Some say a YEAR and other bloggers, columnists etc.. say it's imminent. What's up?

I'd wait if I were you, because:
(a) I think version 2 will be announced around September time. If it isn't you can be pretty sure nothing will be happening until 2017 and go ahead and get version 1 at that point.
(b) Whilst I like my Apple Watch, there is room for significant improvement and I would be hoping that the 2nd generation will be a big leap forwards.

Announcement or release?

Announcement: on a Tuesday
Release: on a Friday

Close enough?

(adding on)
How about this:
Buy this one now. Use it.
Wait to see how long it takes for version 2 to show up.
Don't bother to buy version 2.
Use this timetable to decide whether to wait for version 3 or 4.

Interesting; 1 for July, 11 for September and only 6 for 2017. TWO to one for real early.

12-6 for within next couple months. I'll wait for 2.0, thank you fellahs! :)

There & Back Again
I was really hoping that it would come out in June during WWDC, but I know that they will want to test the 3.0 software, which means it won't happen until September (WHICH IS KILLING ME). I've been patiently waiting since January, reading reasons why I should wait, but wanting one now for the fitness and notifications. But I still have to save up my weekly pocket money to be able to buy it anyway.

So my vote is around September when the iPhones are announced, or a month or so later so they can get the holiday sales. I'm hoping Apple do it earlier so it doesn't compete with iPhone sales....!

Why are you using decimal points as a hardware indicator? It will be Apple Watch "2"
Not 2.0 or 1.5 or whatever you think it will be called.
As far as I am aware 2.0 was released last year ---as a SOFTWARE update!
There was no iPad 2.0 or iPhone 4.0, get the picture yet?

Because 2.0 is sooooooo many LESS, letters, than APPLE WATCH 2. :p

You guys are pretty smart, called NO hardware announcement for June/July. :apple: Hope you are right about September and 2017 pushers are just plain wrong. :)
