The Bluetooth remark was an error of mine Which waw74 pointed out for me.I see you are saying that you have done the unpair/re-pair process, but then you seem to be referring to Bluetooth which has nothing to do with it.
Also you are saying that you are loath to start afresh, which is exactly what the unpair process will do.
Maybe I am misunderstanding, but did you actually complete the actions detained on the page below?

It is an annoyance, but it will not take much longer than half hour to complete the entire process to re-pair the watch.
By saying I am loath to start afresh, I am referring to deleting everything on both the watch AND on the iPhone which was recommended to me.
Reference the Unpair/Repair, yes I carried out the process as in accordance with Apple’s guidelines.
