So nobody is thinking that the acid they used to disolve the chrome plating is actually damaging the speaker, microphone and the rubber isolation?

Right, but I don’t think they care, the point was really just to coat the Apple Watch in 24 karat gold, rather it damages a component or not, really doesn’t seem to be the point behind the video.

Looks nice and in about weeks the plating starts to wear off and looks crappy.

Chemists reading this thread must be having a conniption at the inaccuracies in this video and this report, starting with the fact that the watch is not being “dipped in liquid gold.” This is garden variety electroplating, which they do state in the video, but “dipped in liquid 24 karat gold,” even though wrong, sounds so much more clickworthy.
I think a video of literally melting a pound of gold over a heater and then dipping an Apple Watch in that 1000C+ liquid would be much more interesting. It could be the new "will it blend," except with gold and exploding batteries.

They did the math and decided YouTube click revenue would exceed the cost of a ruined Apple Watch.

Why is that guy wearing sunglasses in an indoor video? He doesn’t realize how dumb it looks? This is insufferable.
I whole heartedly agree that he is annoying. But he has an eye condition that requires the sunglasses. I don’t remember what the issue is. But it is actually a medical issue that requires it.

he vlogs. and the camera he uses has a flip out screen which he watches all the time as he's filming, to monitor focus and exposure (vs. looking at the lens). The glasses hides this and so makes the audience think hes looking directly at them at all times. Overtime, it's become his trademark look.

hate vloggers all you want. he's achieved more success (and money) as a vlogger through youtube than millions of other artists in many people's definition of a more "respectable" medium.

all power to him.

I thought the video was kinda interesting. But, as with most things YouTube, I can only handle short doses of the host.

And I hope they didn't just dump all those chemicals down the drain after the shoot was over.

They’re probably just mild cleaning and acid solutions, while gold is fairly inert and non-toxic and I doubt they’ll be throwing that away anyway. Nothing dangerous or damaging to the environment here. You’ll probably find worse in your household cleaners under the kitchen sink.

I don't hate vloggers. More like pity for a generation or two who are no longer capable of ingesting the written word. And, yes, a bit of contempt toward those who exploit them by d r a g g i n g o u t their "instructional" videos to extract the maximum $ from YouTube.

I don't know how one learns like this. It has to take forever. I have a younger friend who can only learn from video. Somehow, he got through college, I don't know how. But if he wants to learn something on his own, YouTube is his first choice.

I don't have the patience.

I did use YouTube to see how to replace a bathtub shower cartridge a while back. I skipped to the last of *FOUR* videos to where the guy got to the pernt. The first 3 were blah, blah, blah, follow me, wear safety glasses, turn off the water coming into the house...

I do have a favorite vlogger, though. Can't get enough of the Hydraulic Press Channel.

Although there are alternative chemistries, the best and most common gold plating uses cyanide, specifically potassium gold cyanide. As you'd expect, its highly toxic. If you add acid, it will generate cyanide gas.

Agreed on all points. Give me bunch of text and I can scan to find exactly the information I need. By video, I don't know I'm wasting my time until most of it is wasted already.

Also, HPC is the one movie better than the book.

YouTube stars Casey Neistat and JerryRigEverything's Zack Nelson have teamed up to dip an Apple Watch Series 4 in 24-karat pure gold -- the Apple Watch Edition used 18-karat gold for comparison, but it was solid, not just plated. Bonus: unlike the $10,000-and-up Apple Watch Edition, this one can even run watchOS 5.

Who knew Layne Staley lived?!?! Heroin is a real bi*ch!

Totally unwatchable crap.

Casey works much better behind the camera. His voice and appearance is not my cup of tea. JerryRig is different story.

Well that's unnecessary...

YouTube is the same site littered with videos of iPhones being put through blenders, dropped from various heights just because and overrun with people showing you what's inside the box (spoiler alert...same thing as last year).

This is just par for the course.

Well I love Casey's videos, and I actually learned something about gold plating... it was interesting and not overlong... you'd probably get more from reading a book about it, but not in 5 minutes... don't understand the hating on him, if you don't like him, don't watch him.
