I am leaning towards the Bose. Do they stick out or are they more concealed in the ear? I just can't get used to the look of the AirPods. Maybe if the color was more reserved they wouldn't stick out to me. Just yesterday I observed a guy walking out of the store with his AirPods on. To me it looked like he had two broken straws hanging from his ears.

They do stick out a little but the fit is very snug and the sound quality is great.

My Garmin Fenix 3 has no music feature. I have since found several watches that offer music playback without a phone needed. Are there any that rise above the others as far as quality and reliability? Preferably waterproof as I do swim with my watch on and like to count my laps.
To build on my other post, the second issue with these is if you want to operate them (skip, volume, play or pause), you have to jam it further in your ear just to press the button. Not really a good feeling.

This has nothing to do with being strong, but with handling weights in general. I had the Series 2 for testing, and even when I handled light dumbbels like 5 kg or so it just felt like I was handling raw eggs with the Apple watch on my wrist. Plus, you have lot of shear forces working on your wrists when lifting weights...

So if you are strong like bull, not good idea to wear watch, ya?

I use the SoundSport headphones with my AW and am happy with them. They are much less noticeable than the AirPods. They don't stick out much, and the black colour is more subtle. I like the nice seal in the ear canal that you get with Bose earbuds.

Having said that, I see people wearing AirPods at the gym, and personally I think they look fine. Given the crazy stuff some people wear while working out, the headphones are the last thing to catch my attention.

Great replies guys, thanks. I’ll take that suggestion to see how well the Apple earphones stay in my ears to give me an idea of what the AirPods would be like to wear. I like that attachment you get for them but not sure if I feel that I need it, may I should be buying something else that stays put without modification.

Looking forward to the release of the Apple Watch 4 though!

One thing I will say that I love about the AirPods (and the beats that have them) is the w1 chip. I find that my AirPods connect more solidly to my watch than any of the Bluetooth ones I’ve tried (granted I’ve not tried any of the high end Bluetooth models) and being able to seamlessly switch between devices with them is fantastic.

Now that the iPhone 8 and X both have Bluetooth 5, are you guys anxious for the Apple Watch and/or earphones to get it? Or do you think it won’t much difference?

  1. I just use a regular Series 3/Cellular AW. This is an option that I find handy in the gym to prevent an AirPod from falling out, or more accurately......to keep an AirPod from falling on the floor if it does fall out. It is rare for it to come out of my ear, but this provides a little security. I also like that I can have both AirPods available, but only use one at a time for more extended AP/gym time. As for appearance, it looks much better than what a lot of other gym goers are using and works instantaneously with whatever media or phone calls I take.

I was using an AW Series 2 and JayBirds. Liked the sound of the EarPods when I would jog/bike with my iPhone (the wired AirPods) but the wire obviously has no place to plug into the AW and the wire tended to pull out the EarPods. Got the AirPods and they always felt like they were coming loose. Got small foam covers and they felt better but apparently the covers caused problems with the charging case. Took them off and got used to the idea that while the AirPods almost feel like they will fall out, they are in fact very comfortable and I have to really shake my head for them to actually come out. (Still prefer the feel of in-ear types, but ah well.)
There were issues getting the AirPods to switch from an iPhone to the AW on previous versions of iOS and WatchOS, but that seems to have been fixed with iOS 11 and WatchOS 4.

Honestly, using the stock EarPods is not going to give you an accurate idea of how AirPods will work as the weight from the cables changes how those fit. I've never been able to use EarPods but the AirPods are great for me.

I'm also a pretty serious lifter and I've had two Apple Watches over the years, both the aluminum Sport models. I have never once had any sort of damage or impact from a dumbbell or any other type of weight. I don't use kettlebells and that's the only instance I can think of where a weight would make contact with the area of my arm where my watch sits.

The only problem I had was Siri coming up constantly when I was benching from the back of my hand pushing in the crown so I just flipped that around to face up my arm instead.

Nike+ Apple Watch Series 3/LTE with AirPods, and love them. Use them every time I go run. Love the quick and easy connection of the AirPods with the Apple Watch. No issues staying in, sweat, or using touch to control. As mentioned earlier, no real different between a standard Series 3 and the Nike+ model, other than the band, Nike+ specific watch faces, and Nike Run Club app. I don’t know exactly why people don’t like the Nike Run Club app, but I use it for all my runs. I like the detailed metrics screen on the watch compared to the built in workout app or other apps I’ve looked at in the past. I also love their challenges in the Nike Run Club app. You can’t go wrong with this combo. I’d wait for the 4 if you’ve made it this far without upgrading. What’s another month or so at this point. Plus I’d suspect you’ll see upgraded AirPods. Definitely a Qi charging case, and potentially better water proofing.

I’m pretty sure it has to do with series 2 owners. I bought a series 2 Nike watch and love it. I loved the app and it worked great for almost a year. Around the time they launched the series 3, they upgraded the NRC app and it no longer worked reliably on the series 2 watches. It caused a ton of issues. I agree though, it was a fantastic app. When I upgrade my watch, I’ll likely try it out again but for now it’s basically unusable on Series 2 watches, despite working perfectly prior to the update.
