It will make it much easier to prioritise, spot and react to urgent messages, such as a family emergency. These notifications will be much easier to deal with via one’s wrist than through an iPhone, especially in meetings.

Which makes me wonder then how notifications will be handled and if there will be a way to tweak them so only potentially important things come to your wrist. I hope that capability exists so your watch isn't lighting up every time a new post shows up in your Facebook or Twitter feed.

I think he's talking more about "now you don't have to obviously pull out your phone to see that someone sent you a cat video during a meeting". If it's important you will know by looking at your wrist.

But yes, you should be able to tweak notification settings for certain apps like you can now for iOS.

I'm pretty sure Tim Cook was just referring to the convenience to just look up your watch to see the notification and then to decide if you want to interact or respond to it or not.

Anyway, it will be possible to configure which app notifications are displayed on your Apple Watch. This was stated during the Apple event last September.

I would have thought he was referring to the way the taptic notifications work in a very discreet way but would be customisable

The watch NEVER lights up from a notification.... that's not even an OPTION.
If it did, I would have negative interest in such an annoying & rude product. Remember... it gently taps your wrist silently & you tilt towards you to see the notification only IF you chose.
That's one of the clear advantages between this and Android Wear... no buzzing, chirping, ringing, or vibrating on one's wrist.

I think you've been partially misinformed. The watch does have notification sounds as an option, along with the taptic feedback. This was shown during the demo of the watch in September.

While I suspect Tim was referring to notifications in general the ability to filter out 'important' stuff already exists on the iPhone. Do Not Disturb has an option to allow calls from groups, including favourites, or to let repeated calls through if a second call is made within three minutes. It would seem relatively trivial to potentially extend that functionality to allow notifications through to the watch if they're in a specific group if that's something Apple decides to invest the time in to implement.

Seems like do not disturb already implements this exact functionality.

Do not disturb is limited. It only works with certain features like calling. But what if someone wants to limit Snapchat alerts to only a group of people, or Facebook alerts to only comments on statuses. I think that's what the OP was looking for.

And I don't think that's a feature of Watch. It should be a feature, or an addition to Do Not Disturb/Notifications in iOS.

For that kind of app-level control, wouldn't the app devs have to implement that? How is iOS / watch OS going to know the difference between various types of Facebook alerts?

I think the idea is to implement a feature in the API so app notifications can get past Do Not Disturb's restrictions. That, and there should be levels of Do Not Disturb, so there's limited notifications and then near-total blackout. Do Not Disturb is nice and simple, so maybe that's not the best policy, but that's the general idea.

The watch is only going to get notifications from your phone so you will set it up on your phone not your watch. At least that make sence to me

Lame.
I'm REALLY hoping you're wrong.
I'll have to watch Kevin's demo a third time... I don't remember it being obnoxious at all. Hmmmm.... maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

Why is it lame? If the sound is optional, user can turn it off if they don't want sound. Those who want sound can have it. Seems like win-win to me.

It definitely wasn't obnoxious, just the standard default iPhone sms sound.

To me it is lame because already I have people at work answering their Gear watches on tinny obnoxious speaker... the incessant noise from them is DEFINITELY going to trigger a rule about "no wearing smart watches". I genuinely thought that Apple Watch was going to stand out as the non invasive wearable.
To be clear. It doesn't matter if I can mute mine. I don't want to hear everyone else's chirps, rings, and vibrations around me... can I mute THEIRS, lol?

I use Facebook for potential new leeds for my business, so here's to hoping you can customize the notifications. I only want Facebook Pages notifications not new cat video posted.

Since you misspelled leads, I assume business isn't really going to well.

If I can get meeting reminders from my work calendar and track workouts, I will be sold. I get them on my phone (using the Good App) so it should work.

I am typing on an iPad with iOS 8's horrid auto correct. There is no need to judge me or my business based on grammar.
