I'm not complaining, as I've had this watch a long time, and it still gets me through a whole day (with charge to spare). But instead of charging to 100% and draining more quickly (as I'd expect with an older battery), it now only charges to 94%... even after all night on the charger. Is this a specific behavior to a Watch w/aging battery? Just curious about it.

Yes, it would be one of the symptoms of an aging battery. What is you current battery health? It is quite reasonable to use Apple's battery replacement program. You would get a like new watch with a new battery.

Interestingly, after the new update last night, it charged to 100% (for the first time in forever)!

Just checked the watch's battery health; it's at 85%

I will add that I put on my watch at 7am this morning… it’s now almost 8pm, I’m taking it off for the night, and it’s still at 45%. Really can’t complain!

It sounds to me like the "Optimized charge limit on Apple Watch". If you go to the link and scroll down you'll see what I'm talking about. It's a setting you can turn on and off if you would prefer your watch to go all the way to 100% every time.

In addition to Optimized Battery Charging, supported Apple Watch models offer Optimized Charge Limit. With watchOS 10, this feature is available on Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 6 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later. Optimized Charge Limit learns from your daily usage to determine when to charge to an optimized limit and when to allow a full charge. Optimized Charge Limit is on by default when you set up your Apple Watch.
