Do I need to download and install iOS9 on my iPhone in order to take full advantage of Watch OS2? I'm asking because I already pre-ordered an iPhone 6S and would prefer not to spend time updating my current iPhone 5S for the few days left that I will be using it.

You can't pair a watch with watchOS 2 on anything other than 9 and newer. It won't even prompt an update until you update the phone to 9.

Looks like I won't be using WatchOS 2 anytime soon.

You would need iOS 9.x to download/install wOS 2.0.n I believe if running iOS 8 you just won't get an update notification in the Watch app.

Does this mean that IOS 9 will be available to the public on Sept. 16? Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense to make such a big deal about a public release of Watch OS2.

iOS 9 will be available tomorrow too. You will need to install iOS 9 before you will receive the wOS 2 update since it is in the Watch App.

After you install iOS9 on your phone what is the process to update to Watch OS2, will it just prompt you on the watch?

Why would you not install iOS 9 on your 5s? You'll be better adapted for it once you receive your new iPhone. You can focus on the new hardware since you'll already have 9 days experience with iOS 9.

No, you just backup after you install iOS9 (or better yet right before you install wOS2) and it will contain a backup of your :apple:Watch.
