Here's how I look it. Are you planning on keeping the other unit you are expecting. Even with a ridiculous screen protector are you expecting it not to scratch as well. If you don't expect that to get damaged and want to return that for a replacement every time you ding it up, I don't think the watch is for you at all.

To the OP -
In the Apple Watch Forum, someone posted that their watch also scratched. They called Customer Service and was told that Apple would ship them a pre-paid return box and that once they received his, he would be getting a replacement, because their technicians want to see the damage.
Not sure what exact model he had (or if he is even full of it), but you might want to check it out. The comment is about half way down the page by TCBritt4.
Hope this helps.

How is this a big mistake? You have the option to buy a watch with glass or a watch with sapphire. The mistake is on the consumer side. I don't use a screen protector on my iPhone 6+. I acknowledge that I risk scratching it. For the Watch, I wanted sapphire because I pretty much assumed it would get scratched quickly. So I bought Apple Watch instead of Apple Sport. Pretty simple.

I just wish Apple hadn't bothered with the Sports
With its inferior screen, inferior digital crown, inferior materials, inferior charging dock etc - In my opinion it just ruins the Apple watch branding

Your already spending 400 why anyone wouldn't spend the extra 200 for far better watch is beyond me. That toy will be also scratched in 2 days . As far as returning the other one, hell yes, if within 14 days and that junk scratched not only can you return it , that's even more reason to return it

Good point but for example in Canada based on Apple's exchange rate (not real exchange rate) it's 300 more for the same watch but different case and screen. Not sure it's worth it for a gen 1 computer on wrist. This is not real jewellery and will be worth $50 in 4 years unless apple decides to stop making the watches.

Sapphire would have added $100 to the price of the watch. Sapphire is not cheap.

No, it's around $7 more for sapphire. Sources:

Sport ion-x display/touchscreen module costs $20.50 per IHS: http://www.businesswire.com/news/ho...west-Ratio-Hardware-Costs-Retail#.VUdUsnD3aK1

Watch sapphire display/touchscreen module costs $27.40 Per NPD:
http://www.cultofmac.com/297688/apple-watchs-tiny-sapphire-screen-costs-27-produce/

Cost difference (for sapphire) = $7

Now, just to do a sanity check on that $7 figure, the consumer price on Amazon for a generic round 40mm sapphire watch crystal is $8: http://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Sapphire-Crystal-Watch-Glass/dp/B00KMJ2YVM

Why this watch doesn't have the sapphire is beyond me.

what other watch out there (smart watch or normal watch) has a sapphire screen on a $349 watch???

pretty sure that's an incorrect calculation... a watchmaker pays around $50 for a conventional sapphire watch screen... but not one shaped in this complex form...

so even if Apple gets a HUGE volume discount... it's doubtful they get it for less than $20....

I don't agree, how do we know the watch doesn't scratch under normal conditions. .

Well using that logic, you also don't know that it wasn't scratched at night by magical elves that were dispatched by Rolex to damage the watch.

But using some reason and logic you can safely conclude it was not.

This is no different than bend-gate or hair-gate or gap-gate - if the iWatch was scratched by normal usage there would be hundreds of thousands of returns/complaints by now because normal usage is normal usage.

Why does that matter? The sapphire is $20 bucks more. This all goes against the Apple model anyway. Way too many options and form factors instead of just "one for all".

I miss Steve :(

Both watches are over priced
By not having sapphire on the sports was a big mistake by Apple

Go to a Best Buy, try on $250.00 Motorola 360 and then come back and tell me how the Apple watch is overpriced.

This is why OP is kind of annoyed. You're telling him to spend $200 more to become a satisfied customer. It's a SPORT, made to get banged up. Why this watch doesn't have the sapphire is beyond me.

The more I juggle this stuff in my head, the more I'm resenting Apple without Jobs in charge. Just way too many options, and overpriced for a first generation device.

You miss Steve? Did you forget the entire Antenna gate issue with the iPhone 4 was under Steve's watch?

Watch Scratched-Can I return?

160dollars/Google, 175dollars/Amazon. whole steel version is $229 in motorola shop.

Pretty sure when they decided to call it Sports their intentions were because it was light and had more of a sporty look compared to the SS models, not because it could take some damage.

Well, it seems pretty short sighted for apple not to consider it when most people swing there arms on a narrow treadmill.

...and it's junk. My co worker (who is an Android guy) went to Best Buy to look at the moto 360.

"It feels cheap"
"Only the google cards look good. The watch face looks like crap compared to the Apple watch"

You get what you pay for.

Returned mine. They took it back no questions asked. Think they are shocked how easy the sport scratches.

Mine was scratched by a long sleeve dresshirt. No cuff links, nothing crazy. Just that and a sport coat over it caused about 10 thin hairline scratches. Waiting for Stainless to see if people have issues there.

A real joke that a watch face scratches like that. Think it's an issue with the anti-glare coating as glass seems fine. You can literally feel the ridges of tiny scratch. Very disappointed!

You want premium materials for cheap? Doesn't work that way.

It's a watch, it's going to show wear and show that it's used. Even a
$8,000 rolex gets beat up and shows wear.. It's just the nature of the beast.

And this is a Apple product. Don't you think you're a little late to be b^#%#ing about the price now?

I have nothing against people buying the Sports
I just wish Apple introduced the SS and Edition models this year to give the watch a better image and then introduce the Sports next year or in 6 months time

Wait let me make sure I understand this correctly, your scratches were in a coating? Not in the Ion-X glass itself?

I'm not really able to tell if there's a coating on the Sapphire screen. I read other forum members saying there is. If the coating scratches that easily then we are all out of luck. My watch has been through a lot of normal use in the week I've had it. No scratches on the screen so far.

Oh well there's one blessing to being middle aged: I can only see these things now if I make an effort to look for them.

I have to take my distance vision glasses off, scoot the cats and kids out of the room, shoo the husband away, clear all distracting thoughts from my mind, set the watch under really bright light, and then once my Jedi powers are focused, I can see all the things that used to drive me nuts at a glance when I was 23. :p

Apple considers scratches normal wear and tear so of course you can return it if you're within your 14 day period. It doesn't really matter what state it's in because they'll reburbish it with a brand new case and screen like all other returned iDevices.

That would knock a huge chunk off of their sales.

Why are you concerned with the image of an Apple watch? That's apple's problem to worry about, not yours.

I actually think the sport model is excellent. Looks great, nice and light weight, no scratches or marks on it at all. Does not feels inferior in the least.

SS Owners: Your scratches

We all have them. I guess we just have to deal with it....
