Not sure this is the same 69Mustang as the above seems out of character.
Would be interesting to hear your take on the actual show as you usually have some insightful comments.
TIA
One in the same. Disclosure: I have an inherent bias against reality type TV. I view it as the lowest common denominator in entertainment. That being said, I actually watched the episode. Still feel the same. It was not entertaining, interesting, nor informative... to me. Could that be my aforementioned bias? Partially, yeah. But more so, and specifically related to my original quote, Alba, Paltrow, and William don't resonate with me as it relates to apps. As @Kaibelf very accurately pointed out, they are all successful in their own right, but their individual successes don't translate to the environment of the show. At lease in my mind they don't. I totally understand that celebrity brings eyeballs. This is after all, entertainment. A show with successful app developers as "influencers" might resonate more with me, but would probably bore the face off the general public.

All that being said, I'd estimate my derision of the show is 60/40 reality tv bias/show content. As stated in the serious portion of my comment, I'd really like Apple to use some of that cash to buy some quality original content like Netflix and Amazon.

Interesting responses. What these critics are failing to realize is that despite what they think they know about these advisors, they have all successfully turned into very wealthy entrepreneurs because they understand the importance of things like general accessibility, use cases, and promotion.

Therefore, if you aren't independently wealthy based on an app (or really anything else) you've developed and successfully promoted, what exactly are you laughing at? It's easy to say that you have a great concept and are a hidden gem but frankly if you don't know how to sell it, then who cares?

Remember back when Jessica Simpson decided to quit acting and singing and start a clothing line? It's a billion dollar brand, based on boots from department stores. Think about that.
You must not be aware that in America, you can do anything if you're rich and the richer you are, the easier it is to get even more rich. You think these 3 are rich because they are entrepreneurs? NO. They are rich because they were well connected, had some form of acting or musical talent, and were attractive enough to be placed in front of a camera. Everything that they've done since then has been the perks of being rich enough to surround yourself with people who can get your pet projects off the ground successfully.

I'm no fan of "reality" TV either, but I dig Shark Tank. I enjoy watching entrepreneurs pitch their ideas and have to defend them. I find it quite fascinating on many levels. I couldn't believe, for example, there's a market for cat wine! But sure enough, that entrepreneur got a deal.

Shark Tank works for many reasons, most of all production value. The background score is pulse pounding. There's great chemistry between the investors. The show is very well edited and crafted.

I watched the first Planet of the Apps pitch and was blown away by the mediocre production value more than anything else. This is Apple, the masters of design and branding, the company that elevated the product launch video to an artform. Yet Apps was about as middling and pedestrian as they come, worthy of a lower tier cable channel at best. The music sucks. The opening titles are laughably amateur and there's zero chemistry between the investors. Zane is a snooze of a host. The first pitch was so plodding and dull I couldn't be bothered to watch the rest.

I'm quite embarrassed for Apple really. I don't think the general public is all that interested in app development in the first place. For this show to work, it needs a sense of excitement. It needs a sense of humor. It needs great chemistry among the investors and host. Shark Tank does a great job of making entrepreneurship feel exciting and meaningful. Planet of the Apps does the opposite for app development.

"Watch the Season Premiere of Apple's New 'Planet of the Apps' Series"

Thanks but no thanks Macrumors & Apple

Why Apple chose to stuff this into Apple Music is beyond me. It's a show.... wouldn't it make more sense to put this in the TV section of iTunes? You already know which Apple IDs have an Apple Music account so the download/stream button should show up for them. And a purchase button for others.

Or better yet.... if Apple had a SOCIAL media platform like YouTube. It could put this stuff there.

No offense to the lovely Jessica Alba, but what the BLEEP does she know about apps beyond twitter and facebook?

Quite a bit honestly. The reason you don't see her much on movies and film is because she's been successfully running a business. Crazy I know right? I recall reading an interview with her in which she admitted she didn't know a whole ton about the technical workings of things but she knew how to open a JIRA ticket, which is very likely a whole lot more than will.i.iam and Gweneth can do.

aspiring people might ask what he's doing to get such a fortune.

Besides being in the right place at the right time, no he really hasn't done much that's successful. All he does is collect royalties off his music catalog.

I mean seriously you're talking about the guy who said this was going to change the world of photography and tech. This isn't the only one of his failures either.

Seems interesting. I think all of them are successful entrepreneurs (Alba's Honest company worth around 1.5 billion). Definitely can see why they were chosen. Well, maybe aside from Gwyneth Paltrow, last I heard she was writing food blogs (?).

I watched it. It was ok. It doesn't make me any more likely to sign up for Apple Music though. It's something I would perhaps watch occasionally if it was on TV or a service I already subscribe to, but it's not something I would factor in when paying money to subscribe in the first place.

I wonder if Zane Lowe ever feels a bit dirty about all the sad, lame stuff that Apple make him do. I guess the money makes up for it...

I could be wrong but Netflix started their original content with House of Cards... Apple starts with Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, and will.i.am giving their opinion on Apps.

This is going to a big learning curve for Apple if this is the best they can come up with.

oh please
Lol. True. While I do love to read, I probably would watch Planet of the Apps first especially now that people are saying it's not as horrible as its name would suggest.
My post was tongue in cheek. I'm not actually in the mood to sit down for anything for more than a few minutes at a time, especially now that spring is here, so that leaves Tolstoy out for certain. :p I'm not much for tv, the last few years, which is a shame because I hear I'm missing out on some good programs like Downtown Abbey (awhile back) that my friends are following. I enjoy renting a movie now and again and catching a real estate show on HGTV on occasion and that's about it.

I had some weird sharpening effect going on in the small Window. So I right clicked in chrome and opened it in VLC, a few seconds later the 750 mb webm file was downloaded and played full screen in darn good quality on VLC.

I hope they don't change that. :)

It is way better than the cringey trailer suggested, but you need to be 1) interested in the business of creating apps and 2) have a tolerance for cookie cutter reality show formats.

Thankfully Gwyneth doesn't do much, but you can't argue that the rest of the bunch aren't successful entrepreneurs. And there's the Jeremy Clarkson/Gordon Ramsay type in Gary Vaynerchuk.

Typical naysayers here, just watched the first episode, was very enjoyable. Guys, sometimes give things a try before bi&%hing endlessly.

Someone watch it and let us know if it's any good?
Watched the whole episode, and it's alright. If you're into Apps, technology, or business deals, and/or like shows like Shark Tank (which I personally don't care that much for), you might like this show.

Either way, as a first effort by Apple to get their feet wet with original programming, I think they did a good job! They had a nicely designed set, the show was slickly produced, and most importantly, it didn't 'stall' anywhere.

She's not a chemist either, but her shampoo and such put $350M in the bank for her, so...

It's called branding. Its called building a personal brand (aided by huge media guns) and then parlaying that into a subsequent venture. Its called getting famous and then exploiting that fame for max cash. So yeah, the elite panelists are very different from the beggars. Its all rigged and cherry picked by Apple so dont be naieve to think its organic.

Wow from literally cringing when I saw the trailer and first heard of this I just saw the first ten minutes and it's actually not that bad at all. Really really surprised. Interesting ....

So I just watched it now too. The name is cringeworthy... but the show was actually really good. Perhaps the name could grow on me (maybe), but everything else was really good. People may not take the Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gary Vaynerchuk, and will.i.am seriously in this context, which is sad cause these celebs earned their place on the show through their off-screen business achievements.
