I've had my AWU for around a month I gotta say, I'm not impressed with its ability to withstand scratches. I have quite a lot of scratches on the bezel which, albeit small, are still noticeable under lighting. Especially annoying is a scratch that even extends to the sapphire glass that I must've got by making contact with an office chair. I have some scratches on the case itself as well.

To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed because the watch with the same regular wear is holding up even worse than my previous aluminum AW, but it is what it is. Hopefully, the tendency to scratch easily is due to AW being designed that way, in order to better withstand harder knocks.

Pictures?
Here’s the scratch that is also on the sapphire glass, on the upper right corner. There are some other scratches on the bezel, that are not as noticeable in this angle, but they are definitely there.
Again, it’s not a huge deal, it is a tool watch afterall, just a bit disappointing as those marks are from regular office use, nothing extreme, and you’d expect this on the regular aluminium AW with ionized glass, not a tool/sports watch with premium materials.

Thanks for the picture! I wouldn‘t call that a scratch, it looks more like a dent, but unfortunately a pretty deep one. The raised titanium lip around the screen is of course the most exposed part of the Ultra and most of the time it does a great job taking the hits while protecting the screen. Must have been quite a hard hit to dent the lip like that and even reach the screen.

In real life it's really shallow, and the hit really wasn't that hard (if it was a hit with arm without a watch on it, I wouldn't think twice), it's just that the other point of contact was a stainless steel office chair armrest. And again, to compare it with my previous aluminium AW, the usage has been the same.

Ok, but did you hit that aluminium Watch on that steel armrest as well? Because then the hit would probably have gone to the curved edge of the display … which presumably would have scratched or even shattered the screen.

What‘s weird is that one can read both kinds of real-life reports - those like yours where dents happen in „light use“ as well as those where the Ultra looks like new after months of „heavy use“.

Scratches on a extreme sports smartwatch are rad, it shows you do active stuff.
It`s there record you performing physical stuff.

If my watch is not dinged and scratched up after 2 years of use i clearly did not use it for which it had been designed.

I would be worried about this except unlike my iPhone I don’t trade it in after a year and it’s a watch, it’s not supposed to be perfect. And I am sure that Apple will have us getting a new one in a couple of years anyway. Or less!

It’s weird because all the durability tests for the Ultra I have seen on YouTube have the watch being damn near indestructible 😂. I guess it’s just random. But honestly, I wouldn’t sweat it. Stuff like this is why I also have apple care.

‘The ultra is closer to “indestructible“ than others, but that does not include cosmetic damage which does not harm the operation of the watch Anything worn by humans are going to take some “licks”, it is just the way it is no matter how careful you are.

Damn steel chairs! They are pretty but I’ve done more damage on the metal arms of my office chair than anything else! Sorry. That’s frustrating.

There's been tests of people dragging the watch on the floor from a car yet people on here seem to damage theirs easily lol

Scratches are cosmetic, not an indicator of durability. The sapphire display is much more scratch resistant than the Ion-X glass apple is using on the aluminum models and the Ti bezel will protect the display more than the rounded edges on the SS models.

At the end of the day, it’s a gadget. It will lose value over time.

do not agree.

I have an AW 7 SS with "sapphyre glass" with Milanese Loop. After FEW hours the glass was scratched due the loop. Full of bad reviews online. The Sapphyre scratches sooo easily, doesn't matter how much you care the watch ! Beware.

Milanese loop coating might be dlc. DLC scratches sapphire. I have a series 4 and still pristine btw

Ya I don’t get it. I barely ever take mine off. I’ve dropped it. Banged it on door knobs, yard work, mowing, gym, weightlifting, fishing, housework….

Not a single dent and no visible wear unless you get out a magnification lens. I have a titanium band I wear a lot. It’s scratched and worn just like you always get on any ti watch band. The AWU finish, nothing.

Maybe, maybe the sharper edge of the face has a little wear, but I don’t care at all. Fine wear, no nicks and no dents. You can’t even see it unless you shine a tactical light on and and magnify it.

I guess I haven’t chucked it out into the street, and I don’t plan to.

Your opinion doesn’t change the facts: sapphire is a harder more scratch resistant material than ion x glass. As someone else already pointed out, the DLC coating on your Milanese loop is hard enough to scratch sapphire, so this isn’t a surprise.

I got the rubber protective case for the AWU. Seems to work really well. The only downside is that it makes it look like one of those G-FORCE watches.
