sunny So. Ca.
I currently have a V3 and have been really happy with it, but I keep looking at the newer version and thinking about an upgrade. If I buy it now I'll get a decent amount from Apple on a trade in, but I'm not sure if I should just wait until the V5 comes out. If I get this one I won't upgrade to the V5. I really liked my son in laws V4 vs the V3.
What would you do?

Definitely waiting for Series 5. 3 and 4 are just too close to worth the upgrade. If you like 4 you’ll love 5.

I have the 4 and love it, but unless you just need that bigger display now, I recommend you wait until the 5.

I had planned on waiting, but now I find myself thinking about the 4. I just need to forget about it until the fall. There is really nothing wrong with my 3.

I'm waiting for the 5 to drop so that I can get a stainless steel 4 at a killer fraction of a price!

Genuinely curious where you would find a stainless watch for a ‘killer fraction’ of the price? Usually those are never really discounted, and if they are, it’s not for very much at all. The stainless models are the only real Apple Watch model that generally don’t see many lucrative discounts.

Second hand.

I currently have a series 3. Although series 4's larger display looks nicer and has the extra ECG and fall detection feature, I still feel series 3 and 4 are close enough. I mainly used it for activity tracking. So the larger display does not really matter that much. Unless you need the new ECG feature or large display, my opinion is that series 3 is perfectly fine and you wait to upgrade when the next generation comes out.

That is not the case in my country. S3 LTE SS can now be had for same price as cheapest 40mm S4 alu through dealers. Even the SS S4 can be found a tiny bit cheaper through dealers, than Apple's prices, which is (still) not possible with S4 alu versions. I also consider picking up a S4 SS if/when it has a similar price drop after S5 have launched (unless S5 offers something amazing).

I recently upgraded from the SS S3 to the SS S4 and man....I LOVE IT! It feels like the display is twice the size and the additional complications/layouts are AWESOME!

Here also in America.
I recently purchased the series 3 40mm SBSS for about $80 cheaper than the gps version of the 44mm.
I wanted to get the series 4 but couldn't justify spending more for it and Apple care, which is now & $79 (up from $50 for the series 3).
Also I needed a SS version due to the fact that I bang my wrist a lot at work and I work in the freezer which is consistently around -20 degrees Fahrenheit all day.

Only issue you face is that your series 3 value will drop further when the AW5 drops, if using that money to offset a new Watch is a factor. If it is then the AW4 will still be an excellent piece of tech even when the AW5 does arrive.

Also the AW5 will most likely only be incremental in progression and likely will look identical to the AW4.

Wait for S5. It's coming soon...

Of course it is, I think that’s fairly obvious. But the real question is, is when? Is it September 2019? Traditionally Apple has been releasing the Apple Watch in September or perhaps it might be earlier in 2020. The reason I bring that up, is I don’t necessarily think the Apple Watch needs to be released on an annual basis, the technology is maturing rather quickly and there are so many features that Apple can implement each year to the Apple Watch. Also, there haven’t been too many rumors indicating a fall release for the Apple Watch Series 5, but I suspect in the later months, we will know more.

I don't believe I'll lose any money the way I look at it. I love the way the space black SS feels and look. Plus it's added protection. Compare this with series 4 SS and I don't get your point.
In a year the series 4 will drop in price and then I'll say people will lose money if they upgrade to the 5.
