I was at an Apple Store yesterday and watched someone buy an unlocked iPhone 6 to replace their iPhone 5. I feel bad
Why, maybe they need one and the difference between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6s is so minor that its not a huge deal.

I was at an Apple Store yesterday and watched someone buy an unlocked iPhone 6 to replace their iPhone 5. I feel bad because I'm sure he'll be quite upset after next week's announcement, but I figure news of a new iPhone in September is basically mainstream knowledge by now. It didn't seem like his iPhone 5 was lost or broken (maybe it was). Would you have interrupted the sale to tell them about the upcoming iPhone event?

Anyone who's buying an iPhone right now probably doesn't care and just wants a phone right now.

There are thousands of iPhone still sold daily. Hate to say it but it is US, in these forums, that is not normal as most of the general phone buying public has no idea that Apple is getting ready to deliver another phone.

Right. iPhone is iPhone.

To them, if today is their day to waltz in and have an eligible upgrade then that is the day to get their iPhone.

Then they come into the office and see the new 6Ss... mull over it and move on.

Is returning something unethical?

Some people do consider it to be unethical to buy something with the sole intention of using it for a short period and then returning it (this practice long predates smartphones). Others don't, I guess. On the scale of ethical dilemmas, this issue probably ranks fairly low; but there you go.

I deal with these kind of customers every day single day lol. Not everybody cares about having the latest greatest device. It's not just iPhone users, but also Samsung users. Sometimes they want free phones or they just don't care, I remember when the Note 5 came out, we were taking pre-orders and I kept telling customers they could pre-order the new one instead, but they would be like nah I'll stick with the Note 4! I'm like SERIOUSLY? lol same with iPhones.

Note 4 has removable battery and SD card slot, so that might had been the reason

There are actually people that don't care; they don't care about the latest and greatest even if it were priced the same. I actually am fond of people like that because they're a little more care free about matters like this. Let the guy enjoy his new iPhone.

You are fond of those people while many of us see it as typical ignorance. There are way too many people who are carefree when wasting their money and that is a detriment to society, not something to be fond of.

I'm glad that the guy is enjoying his new iPhone, but you would think someone would put a little bit of thought into a $600 investment. He certainly doesn't need a pat on the back for doing it.

I'm fond of his care-free attitude. It's not my place to judge his ignorance. I, of course, would wait for the latest, even if it meant waiting a few weeks or a month or two without a phone. Some people really don't care, because there really is far more important matters than the latest iPhone. It's about being content.

Oh, I don't know. I tried to talk my sister out of buying an iPhone 6 (like me she had the 5s) but she went ahead and bought it anyway. She didn't listen to me at all about the newer models coming out.

I would of "cough cough 6s is releasing this month cough "
I was at Costco this week and moronic sales clown tells middle-aged couple he didn't know when the + would be released. I said there will be an announcement on the 9th.Up to you. They walked away from sales clown. They had no idea regarding + announcement and they had 2 5Ss.

Why on earth would you not have waited until sept 18th at this point?

Because as I said, I got a good deal.

The 6s will be around £220 up front to remain on the same price of tariff I'm on now. All I wanted was the larger screen and  Pay. If I wanted to upgrade to the 6s in September I'd have that £100 to pay to upgrade early plus the £200-220 up front fee for the phone from O2. My 5s won't cover that outlay.

I sold my 5s for £180, paid off the £100 on my 5s Refresh tariff to upgrade early and paid just £9.99 up front to get the 6. I basically upgraded for nothing and still had £70 in my pocket.

I have an Air 2 for the ridiculously heavy iOS stuff that the iPhone 6 might not handle ... and I doubt that will happen any time soon. If anything I see the A9 in the 6s perhaps machine the Geekbench scores for the Air 2's A8X in terms of multicore.

So yeah, that's why I didn't wait.

Like I said, far too many people have that care-free attitude when spending huge amounts of money and that is why so many people live paycheck to paycheck and are in tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt.

We need to stop the care-free spending and get people to put some real thought into their purchases.

Like I did with my upgrade ;)

She was smart!
Yes, she was smart by making a uninformed and impulsive decision to make a poor investment. Smart...

So now making care-free decisions is "smart".

I bet when you go buy a car you will offer to pay the same thing for the 2014 leftover as you would pay for the 2015, because being care-free is smart?

At the end of the day, what people spend their money on or how they live their loved has absolutely nothing to do with you. You're beginning to take what people do with their money oddly personally.

I don't actually understand your above post, but it seems like you put real thought into it and found out that upgrading now was a smart decision, not just an impulsive and ill-informed one. That makes sense and IMO you did the right thing.

The person I was replying to only likes it if you don't pay any attention and make care-free purchases.

I am not taking anything personally. I am simply giving an opposing point of view to someone who says that it's "smart" to be care-free when making major purchases.
